Why are the Sester's in the news?

A father and son are in jail together after being accused of stepping over the severely decomposing body of a recluse so they could rob her home.

John T. Sester Sr., 53, joined his son in jail Wednesday after being arrested on burglary and breaking into Virginia Maxwell’s Millrich Avenue home in mid-September.

The younger Sester, who goes by Jon Sester, according to court documents, has been in jail since Sept. 30 on charges that he broke into another house on the same street as Maxwell’s earlier in the month and stole copper pipes. Records indicate both robberies were done Sept. 12.

On Thursday, both Sesters faced Judge Cheryl Grant on the allegations regarding Maxwell’s house. Bond was set for the elder Sester at $10,000 while the younger Sester’s bond is $15,000.

Stolen from Maxwell’s house were copper pipes, jewelry and antiques.

Late Tuesday night, I reported that MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell made some unfortunate and racially-charged remarks about Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele. I would be remiss if I did not note that O’Donnell called Steele to apologize and also issued an apology on his his program last night. It was a sincere and thoughtful apology and O’Donnell offered it without reservation:

I called him back immediately and apologized for using the word he found offensive. Those of us who are not descendants from slaves can never know the full impact of the word master in the ears of an African-American man. Michael Steele told me, “It sort of stung.”

He could not have been more gracious and forgiving. He also told me, “the interview was a lot of fun, I loved our give and take, I will be back on the show.” I invited him on the show tonight so I could apologize to him directly in front of everyone who had seen the interview. that wasn’t necessary, and the apology on the phone was more than anyone else had done who slighted him in the past. A Republican publicly accused Steele of slavishly supporting the Republican party. Michael Steele is still waiting for a personal apology on that one. As to the rewrite, what I should have said is as the first congressional election during his party chairmanship approaches, Michael Steele is distancing as fast as he can trying to charm tea partiers while never forgetting his job title chairman of the Republican National Committee. That I chose a word that could be misinterpreted as a racial reference on the same night that I took to this pulpit to so righteously condemn the racist e-mails sent by new york billionaire and Republican candidate for governor, Carl Paladino is ironic. So too, that Michael Steele has yet to pass judgment on those same e-mails.

I completely understand and sympathize with the many ways in which a party chairman’s public speech is constantly constrained. i think we all know what Michael Steele would like to say about his New York candidate’s e-mails and I think we all understand why he hopes he’s never asked about them. My public speech is not similarly constrained by political considerations. I am honored that Michael Steele believes me to be the kind of person he can call to explain his hurt and politely request and expect an apology. After apologizing to him on the phone, I told him I would apologize on this program, something he did not request. I also told him that I, too, thought the interview was a lot of fun, that I enjoyed our give and take. and that I would love to do it again whenever his schedule allows. Mr. Chairman, I sincerely apologize.

I will, however, note that ABC News did a story yesterday on the non-event of Rush Limbaugh calling Obama a ‘jackass,’ yet I haven’t seen a major media outlet report on O’Donnell’s remarks or his subsequent apology, which seems infinitely more newsworthy.

I will never profess to being the smartest guy in the room. In fact, that bit of humility separates me from my past liberal lifestyle where I always knew I was the smartest guy in the room.

So given that I'm not the smartest guy in the room, I always observe and try to emulate what the smartest guys are doing.

So if you are looking to get rich, you typically don't follow the path of you average homeless dude. Right? You do what the rich people are doing.

Right now the rich are buying gold....... Lot's of gold.

The rich may be different from you and me, but they are not immune to the charms of gold. At a time when advanced economies are in a race to devalue their currencies, private bankers are reporting booming demand from their well-heeled clients for the metal that is no government's liability. Is this surge in interest part of a considered strategy to preserve wealth, or are the rich simply responding to gold's impressive price momentum?

At a time when the trailing 10-year total return for the S&P 500 remains negative, it's certainly difficult to ignore an asset that has returned nearly 400% over the same period. One UBS private banking executive reported that a wealthy couple purchased a tonne of gold -- worth more than $40 million at the current market price!

How much do teachers make?

A good breakdown of teachers' pay with benefits.........

The average teacher in the state of Illinois makes $61,402. Illinois teachers work around 176 days, 300 minutes, or 5 hours, per day. That's just over 35 weeks per year. On average, they make $348.88 per day, $1.16 per minute, or $69.60 per hour guaranteed. Teachers in Illinois work an average of 12 years. They can retire at age 55.

In order to find out what they really make though, you should take their pension benefits, net present value them and amortize them over their career. As of 2010, the average pension for an Illinois teacher is $43,164. It compounds annually for life at 3% per year.

Now it's time to do some math and make some assumptions. Assume that the lifespan of the teacher is no different than the average American, 78 years. If they start teaching at age 22, on average they will quit at 34. This means they will wait 21 years to collect their pension. The discount rate for the cash flows is a conservative 5%.

When you crunch all the numbers, the net present value of that pension is $290,756. Amortizing that over a twelve year career adds $24,229.64 to their average salary, making their actual salary before health benefits are added in a tidy $85,631.67, or $97.31 per hour.

And here I decided against going into the teaching profession because of money and the pack of idiots I was surrounded by in Teacher's College....

Life in "Progress" City - Harrisburg edition

Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania, dodged financial disaster last month by getting money from the state to make a payment to its bondholders.

It did so even though the state warned that the money had to be used for city workers’ pensions.

Now Harrisburg is calling on the state again. On Friday, the city said it could not meet its next payroll without money from the state’s distressed cities program.

Across the country, a growing number of towns, cities and other local governments are seeking refuge in similar havens that many states provide as alternatives to federal bankruptcy court. Pennsylvania will have 20 cities and smaller communities in its distressed-cities program if Harrisburg receives approval. Michigan has 37 in its program; New Jersey has seven; Illinois, Rhode Island and California each have at least one. This is on top of troubled housing, power and hospital authorities.

Seriously, I keep hearing this liberal tripe about how they'll use science to govern. If that's the case, how can these clowns ignore the scientific evidence that liberalism doesn't work?

The states noted above not one of them even has a shade of red. These are the most blue states in the country and also the most bankrupt. It isn't just some anecdotal evidence it's about as close to scientific law that you can get...... Go Blue, Go Bankrupt.

California officials are cutting off use of state-issued welfare debit cards at casinos across the country and on cruise ships, in the wake of Times reports that the aid cards have been used to spend or withdraw millions of dollars in benefits at popular vacation spots including the Las Vegas strip and on ships sailing from ports around the world.

More than $69 million meant to help the needy pay their rent and clothe their children was accessed in all 49 other states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, according to data obtained by The Times from the California Department of Social Services.

The department instructed the vendor that administers the debit card program to make the changes Monday afternoon, in response to a report in The Times’ Monday edition.

Department of Social Services Director John Wagner said the move is part of the Schwarzenegger administration’s commitment to "rooting out waste, fraud and abuse in these programs" and "to ensure these resources are going to the people they are intended for."

Call me crazy but as a caveman type conservative, I'd do something radical; like visit the homes of these derelicts and investigate all of them for welfare fraud.

But hey, even the poor need a nice vacation to Hawai'i.

Life in "Progress" City - Indianapolis edition

An Indianapolis cookie shop could be evicted from its longtime location for refusing a special order from a college homosexual group.

The bakery "Just Cookies" has operated in a city-owned market for over 20 years. The president of the board that oversees the market told the Indianapolis Star that he would "hate to lose them" as a tenant -- but that could very well happen because owner David Stockton took a moral stand and did not want to endorse homosexual activity.

Controversy arose this week after the owners of the bakery cited moral objections to a special-order request for rainbow-decorated cookies for next week's "National Coming Out Day" observance at a nearby university campus. Stockton told the caller he did not feel comfortable in supporting homosexual values, especially because it would not set a good example for his two daughters.

Recovery.gov promised transparency on how the government spends every dollar of stimulus money, but there's $162 million the website doesn't disclose.

Recipients of 352 federal stimulus contracts, grants and loans have failed to report how they spent the money, the status of their projects or how many jobs were funded, according to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Despite orders from the White House to crack down, enforcement is spotty.

A Bolivar city councilwoman who helped others vote illegally has lost her own right to vote and to run for office.

The Jackson Sun reports that Brenda Woods was running for council and mayor in 2009 when she helped people to vote who were not eligible because of felony convictions.

The city is waiting for a legal opinion on whether Woods can continue to serve on the council if she is not sent to prison at her Nov. 19 sentencing.

Nearly 200 Los Angeles County employees earned more than a quarter of a million dollars in 2009, according to a list of the county’s top earners released late Monday in response to a public records act request from The Times.

Many of the 199 workers named on the list included physicians, county firefighters and a handful of top sheriff’s employees, as well as well-known county leaders such as Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley ($345,587) and Sheriff Lee Baca ($325,664). Both Cooley and Baca earned a substantial amount of compensation listed as "other earnings," in Cooley's case about $53,000 and nearly $47,000 for Baca.

The Times requested the base salary, overtime and “other earnings” for county employees whose total annual earnings exceeded $250,000. “Other earnings” can include bonuses for special skills or responsibilities or unused money for benefits that can be cashed out as taxable income, among other things. County officials were not immediately able to detail what type of additional payments went to Cooley and Baca.

No. 5 on the list was the county’s chief executive, William T Fujioka, who made $403,140 in 2009. Four physicians earned more: Elaine Yang, a senior physician at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center ($430,909); Christine Holschneider, a chief physician at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center ($423,533); Gail Anderson Jr., a medical director at Harbor-UCLA ($421,648); and John McDonald, a chief physician at Harbor-UCLA ($413,807).

Ninety-nine of the 199 employees made overtime. Seventy-one of them made more than $10,000 in overtime in 2009.

State income taxes

Framed on a wall in my office is a personal letter to me from Bill Gates the elder. "I am a fan of progressive taxation," he wrote. "I would say our country has prospered from using such a system—even at 70% rates to say nothing of 90%."

It's one thing to believe in bad policy. It's quite another to push it on others. But Mr. Gates Sr.—an accomplished lawyer, now retired—and his illustrious son are now trying to have their way with the people of the state of Washington.

Mr. Gates Sr. has personally contributed $500,000 to promote a statewide proposition on Washington's November ballot that would impose a brand new 5% tax on individuals earning over $200,000 per year and couples earning over $400,000 per year. An additional 4% surcharge would be levied on individuals and couples earning more than $500,000 and $1 million, respectively.

Along with creating a new income tax on high-income earners, Initiative 1098 would also reduce property, business and occupation taxes. But raising the income tax is the real issue. Doing so would put the state's economy at risk.

To imagine what such a large soak-the-rich income tax would do to Washington, we need only examine how states with the highest income-tax rates perform relative to their zero-income tax counterparts. Comparing the nine states with the highest tax rates on earned income to the nine states with no income tax shows how high tax rates weaken economic performance.

Red State notes that senate will soon be working on abolishing Right to Work laws across the nation.....

Back in June, we reported that California Congressman Brad Sherman (D) was circulating a letter to his fellow Democrats to introduce legislation to repeal “Right-to-Work” laws in 22 states. Now, with less than a month before the mid-term elections and five weeks before a lame-duck session in Congress, Sherman has introduced legislation to eliminate state Right to Work laws all across America.

Currently, there are 22 states in the U.S. that have laws where workers who are employed at companies that are unionized have a choice whether or not to join or pay the union. These states are known as Right-to-Work states.

Once again, we need to ask ourselves some questions.

1) In general, which states above are having the most difficulty with chronic unemployment; Blue States or Red States?

2) Do you think that taking away right to work states will motivate US companies to bring good manufacturing jobs to the US or encourage them to ship those jobs overseas?

3) Does the fact that this is even talked about create enough uncertainty for American employers to discourage the hiring of American workers

4) Why would you want to export the blue state unemployment misery to the rest of the US?

Health care promises keep on coming

Despite assurances from the Obama administration that the recently signed healthcare reform law would save Americans money, benefit professionals are seeing huge medical premium hikes and decreased benefits.

Employers and ultimately taxpayers could get sticker shock as plans companies begin to renew their medical benefits packages for 2011.

A Manhattan health benefits consultant says insurance companies are telling employers they will pay have to pay much more in 2011 -- and for reduced coverage.

"It should be noted that premium increases were in excess of 30 percent over the previous year," said Barbara Brody of Barbara A. Brody & Associates. Brody said average rate increases next year for Manhattan-based firms she advises could be as high as "67 percent but will average 30 percent."

When liberals run stuff - Trade unions

Duh!

When an electrical workers union realized it was losing work because of the high cost of its labor, it decided to do something about it: introduce cheaper laborers that don’t have to complete normal (and expensive) union requirements.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is hoping to become more appealing to businesses by hiring workers that are cheaper to train, and thus cheaper for customers to employ.

Chicago Union News explains the move:

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers plans to add a new classification of workers who will not be required to complete the union’s standard training program and, as a result, will receive less pay than many card-holding electricians. …

Typically, union electricians must finish a five-year apprenticeship program -– 8,000hours of classroom and on-the-job training –- before they are certified as journeymen.

The extensive training is what usually separates union tradesmen from nonunion. The new grade of workers, who are called construction wiremen or construction electricians, will fall in between apprentices and journeymen in experience.

The mandate is coming from the union’s international leadership, which believes that the union will now be able to capture work that many businesses have farmed out to non-union companies because of costs. But the move has local members in Chicago appalled and upset:

“If you start bringing in workers for 40 percent of what journeymen make, those journeymen are never going back to work,” said a Local 134 member who asked to remain anonymous. “If the contractors can get it done for less money, that’s what they are going to do.”

Welfare recipients must prove they can't afford life's necessities without government aid: A single parent with two children generally must earn less than $14,436 a year to qualify for the cash assistance and becomes ineligible once his or her income exceeds about $20,000, said Lizelda Lopez, spokeswoman for the Department of Social Services.

Congratulations to the City of Cincinnati for dropping their most dangerous neighborhood in the country to #24.

Now the number one most dangerous neighborhood in the country is in Chicago, where you have a one in four chance of being the victim of a violent crime. Chicago was followed by Cleveland, Las Vegas, and Atlanta.

Read the descriptions of these neighborhoods and answer these questions.

1) In the 2008 presidential election, who carried these neighborhoods, Obama or McCain? By what margin?

2) Are these neighborhoods the most dangerous in the country as a result of liberal "progressive" or radical conservative policies?

3) When was the last time a republican in any election carried any one of these neighborhoods?

4) If you lived in one of these neighborhoods, would it ever occur to you that the same party keeps running these neighborhoods and they've never cleaned them up so maybe we need some different leadership?

5) Albert Einstein once said the definition of insane is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Does that mean the democrats are insane by definition alone?

Jobs, jobs, jobs

Those with high school diplomas have an unemployment rate of 9.7 percent, compared with 5 percent for those with at least a bachelor's degree. Even recent college graduates have suffered. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, job offers to graduating seniors declined 21 percent last year and are expected to decline as much as 7 percent more this year.

The headline unemployment number underplays the disaster. The 9.6 percent quoted does not reflect those who have stopped looking for work since mid-2008—that would give a rate of over 11 percent. Private incomes remain about 5.4 percent below the level of the third quarter of 2008, a dramatically bigger drop than in any previous postwar cycle, when private incomes never declined at all.

As I continually say, I'm not a conservative for me. I'm a conservative for average working stiffs who need good value add jobs to make it.

It's too bad that our politicians can't grasp that every time they make it more expensive for businesses in this country to locate a plant (via environmental regulation, minimum wage laws, employment mandates, taxes, etc.,) it just gives a company more motivation to manufacture out of the country.

The usual response from liberals is to offer up protection tariffs for out of the country goods. This never works. Why? Let's use the example of computer manufacturer. Assume President "Progressive"decides to put tariffs on imports from domestic companies. All that does is make for more expensive products for the American consumer.

That manufacturing facility may be exporting 60-70-80-90 percent of it's product to other countries. As a result, there's no incentive to move that manufacturing facility to the US to compensate for protection tariffs on such a small segment of business.

But what do I know? I was never a community organizer.

In the good old days, when you wanted to gamble, you had to play through some vehicle run by the mob. Whether it be the number or some back door poker palace, the mob ran it all.

Fast forward to today, where you still have to gamble through the mob but we've added various middle men to the process; namely politicians and lobbyists..............

FBI agents swept across Alabama this morning arresting state lawmakers and lobbyists as part of a federal probe into efforts to pass gambling legislation last spring.

The biggest name arrested so far has been VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor, who was arrested at his Montgomery home this morning.

Also arrested today have been state senators Jim Preuitt, R-Talladega, Quinton Ross, D-Montgomery, Larry Means, D-Attalla, Harri Anne Smith, I -- Slocomb and Montgomery lobbyist Jerrod Massey.

McGregor lawyer Joe Espy of Montgomery said he knows of no evidence of wrong doing on McGregor's part.

"We plan to defend vigorously," Espy said.

Federal prosecutors had subpoenaed multiple legislators to come before the grand jury.

The Department of Justice in July began notifying various politicians, reporters, lobbyists and others that their conversations may have been picked up during wire taps. The phone taps occurred during a 38-day period this spring when the Alabama Legislature was considering a gambling bill.

The plain fact is that businesses and residents alike play the cost/benefit principle in locating their businesses and personal lives.

While I naturally believe that a pro-growth business environment draws people to an area, I have to admit that is actually a by product of something bigger.

Jobs are a byproduct of healthy industry. They are not a goal in and of themselves and they most definitely are not something the government itself should be trying to encourage or create.

Jobs are what happen when someone has too much work to do by himself, so he gets someone to help. If you want to work, GO F***ING WORK. Start a f***ing business. Find something that you can do and do it and sell the product of your labor to others.

What? You don't want work for yourself? You want to work for someone else? Fine, but it's not businessowners' responsibility to employ people and its not the federal governments responsibility to somehow force them to. If you want a f***ing job, then AGITATE THE F***ING FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO EXPAND BUSINESS AND "JOBS" WILL COME. Make it easier for the people who actually do business and jobs will come as a byproduct. Jesus Christ, and you're also asking for higher taxes on the very people you need to create your precious JOBS? ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME?

WHAT THE F*** HAS HAPPENED TO THIS COUNTRY? Why does everyone want to be treated like a child? And the g****m federal government ENCOURAGES this s***.

Businesses aren't in the business of making "jobs," they're in the business of CREATING VALUE FOR THEIR OWNERS. When you say that a business should be making more JOBS, you are saying that the capital of those business owners should not actually belong to them and belongs to the "workers". Has it every occurred to these people that only one of those is actually the responsibility of the federal government to fund, and its not "JOBS".

Case in point. Right now, the Gekko's hire a lawn treatment company to treat our lawn and a company to mow the lawn at my business. If my business slows down to the point that I have time on my hands to do it myself. I will. Those jobs will then disappear. The fact that I can make more money doing my specialty allows me to "hire" people to clean my office, mow my lawn, paint, etc.

When things contract for businesses, it's the people on the lower end of the food chain (or as a friend of mine calls it "the bottom of the scrotum pole") who will always bear the brunt of the slowdown. Something the dumb asses in government can't seem to get their arms around.

The need to purge RINO's

One of the great debates this campaign season is whether or not conservatives should back RINO's or more conservative tea party candidates.

The conventional wisdom is that RINO's are more electable in a general election. But really who needs democrats when you have RINO's like this...........

Anyone listening with eyes closed could easily think that Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, is working at the headquarters of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Sam Granato, advising him in a loud, clear voice how to win crossover GOP votes.

It isn’t actually the senator. It is his soundalike son and recent campaign manager, Jim Bennett.

“I get that all the time,” the younger Bennett says about how much he sounds like his father. He is now a paid Granato aide working as a communications adviser.

That’s an unexpected post for a lifelong Republican, not to mention one whose father and grandfather (former Sen. Wallace Bennett) were GOP senators for Utah. But maybe it is not so surprising for someone upset that his father was depicted by other GOP candidates as not conservative enough for Utah.

He says he is supporting Granato now because “he lines up well with the mainstream in Utah, and actually with the mainstream in the Utah Republican Party. Sam is practical. He is willing to reach across party lines for real solutions.”

The freshman class of 5,160 at the University of Colorado-Boulder is 6.5 percent smaller than last year and the smallest since 2005.

CU financial chief Ric Porreca told the Board of Regents Friday that glitches with the new online student management system frustrated some Colorado students, who enrolled at other colleges.

Regent Monisha Merchant says the economy could be another reason for the drop in enrollment.

The Daily Camera in Boulder reports that CU expected 5,215 freshmen this year. One dormitory was shut because of the smaller class.

Overall enrollment on the Boulder campus is 29,952, a 1 percent drop from last year.

Just out of curiosity. I wonder if the idiots running the glitches on their new "online student management system" lost their jobs?

But I wonder if it even crossed the mind of one of those CU technocrats that maybe it wasn't the online student management system but the astronomical tuition increases........

The University of Colorado filed a formal request with the state Friday seeking to increase its in-state tuition by up to 9.5 percent next year, and outlined plans for four more years of hikes as high as 9 percent.

A 9.5 percent increase, which CU is requesting as the ceiling for next year's increase, would add $667 to undergraduate tuition in the College of Arts and Sciences, which enrolls most students. That would bring the annual bill to $7,685.

But CU officials say it's too early to draft specific tuition proposals, and rates are typically set in June and depend heavily on state funding. Friday's request, if approved by state officials, reserves the option for CU to raise next year's tuition beyond 9 percent.

"This increase is necessary to continue operations with a reduced level of state support," according to the plan that CU filed with the Colorado Department of Higher Education.

The plan says CU expects to receive $158.5 million in state support, and may face a revenue gap of $77 million in fiscal year 2011-12.

If in-state tuition were to increase at the maximum rate outlined in CU's five-year plan, it would reach about $10,850 by the 2015-16 school year. That's 55 percent more than tuition now.

Last night, CBS radio reporter Howard Arenstein was arrested for growing marijuana. Arenstein and his wife, Orly Azoulay, were arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

According to the New York Daily News, Washington Police found 8 foot tall pot plants in Arenstein’s backyard.

D.C. police spokesman Lt. Nicholas Breul, said that the police had received complaints of the couple growing marijuana in their backyard. The cops obtained a search warrant, than raided Arenstein’s home, where they found large marijuana plants in the back yard, as well as packaged marijuana in the home.

Let's see. If you were a pot smoking member of the media in 2008, would you have voted for Obama or McCain?

The September 24, 2009, mob assault on 16-year-old Derrion Albert was captured on cell-phone video and broadcast around the world, provoking a crisis in the Obama administration. The White House was at that moment pushing the International Olympic Committee to award the 2016 Games to Chicago, a city intimately associated with the president and his inner circle. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan hurriedly flew to the Windy City promising more federal aid, while the Chicago school system launched a $40-million social-services and security program to connect “at-risk” male students with social workers.

Not surprisingly, the federal and local efforts have borne little fruit. Since Albert’s death, 78 more youth under the age of 19 have been killed in Chicago, overwhelmingly in black-on-black shootings. The studied silence in Chicago about the massive reality that underlies that city’s youth-violence epidemic—black family breakdown—is so complete as to border on perverse.

And that's why the KKK couldn't have devised a better system of exterminating black youth in this country.

Conservatives have been called insensitive, unsympathetic and even racist for simply recognizing that the welfare state hasn't done anything but drain billions of dollars from the public coffers to subsidize genocide in our cities.

When the poverty pimps in this country start calling this out, it'll be the first step in cleaning it up.

If democrats had knowledge, they would be republicans

The unpleasant fact that these liberals rarely mention, and may not know, is that large swaths of the Democratic base, groups they need to vote in droves next month — blacks, Hispanics and young people — are far less civically literate than their conservative counterparts.

Therein lies the hurdle for the Democrats: How can they excite this part of the base that is not engaged and knowledgeable in an off-year election? How can they motivate these voters to help Democrats maintain their Congressional majorities when, according to a poll released this week by the Pew Research Center, 42 percent of blacks, 42 percent of Hispanics and 35 percent of voters ages 18 to 29 years old don’t even know that Democrats have a majority in the House? It’s sad. Pathetic, really. But it’s a political reality. (Only 71 percent of Democrats overall knew that Democrats had a majority in the House. By comparison, 82 percent of Republicans knew it.)

Instead of focusing like a laser on this problem, part of the White House’s new strategy appears to be to pick a fight with the left’s ivory tower intelligentsia.

Vice President Joe Biden said at a fund-raiser on Monday that the Democratic base should “stop whining.” The “professional left” may be whining, but underengaged Democrats are simply wandering. And, by the way, many Democrats don’t even know who the vice president is. In the Pew poll, 64 percent of Hispanics, 51 percent of young adults and 45 percent of blacks could not name Biden as the vice president. (Only 35 percent of Republicans got it wrong.)

But let's extend this knowledge further. How many democrats can tell you that every bankrupt, shithole big city or public school is run by democrats?

That's why ignorance works for democrats. See, if democrats actually had any knowledge of things like economics, civics, or history, they would be republicans.

The standoff between the Obama administration and Senator Mary Landrieu over an offshore drilling moratorium also is creating hurdles for White House officials putting together the next budget.

The Louisiana senator is blocking the confirmation of Jacob Lew, President Barack Obama’s choice to be White House budget director, to protest the administration’s temporary ban on deepwater oil and gas drilling, put in place after the BP Plc oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Office of Management and Budget has been without a director since the end of July, disrupting or at least delaying administration decisions on spending levels, taxes, budget cuts and the overall budget direction for fiscal 2012.

“This is an absolutely key time to have a very top-rate budget director in place,” said James R. Horney, a budget expert at the Center on Budget Policy and Priorities in Washington. “This is such a delicate time and so many big issues.”

Lew’s nomination was approved 22-1 last week by the Senate Budget Committee, clearing the way for a vote by the full chamber. Under rules that let any senator block a presidential nominee for any reason, Landrieu put a “hold” on Lew’s nomination Sept. 23. She said the drilling moratorium was having “such a devastating impact on working people and small businesses throughout the Gulf Coast.”

Principal Financial Group said Thursday that it will leave the medical insurance business, further reducing competition among health insurers in Iowa.

Principal will transfer the renewal rights for its health insurance customers in Iowa and 30 other states to UnitedHealthcare over the next 36 months.

The move will guarantee that all Principal health insurance customers will be able to get a quote for a new policy despite pre-existing conditions, said Iowa Insurance Commissioner Susan Voss.

The decision means the disappearance of the third-largest health insurer in Iowa at a time when half a dozen other small insurers have told the Iowa Insurance Division that they also plan to quit selling health insurance in Iowa.

Even though the majority of the Tri-State is still riding high after the Cincinnati Reds won the National League Central Division championship, a group of people are upset after some players were seen smoking cigars in the team's clubhouse.

The Cincinnati Health Department confirmed Thursday that five people called the statewide smoking ban complaint hotline and that the team will be investigated for violations of the state smoking ban.

Numerous players could be seen on TV smoking cigars given out by Reds owner Bob Castellini Tuesday night after the team beat the Houston Astros to clinch its first playoff berth since 1995.

The Obama administration said Thursday that its top health official will "exercise her discretion" in enforcing a new health-law requirement, a move that could help McDonald's Corp. and other employers from disrupting their health-care policies for hourly workers.

The announcement Thursday followed a report in The Wall Street Journal that McDonald's warned federal regulators it could drop its health-insurance plan for nearly 30,000 restaurant workers unless regulators waive a new requirement of the health overhaul. The requirement, known as the minimum medical loss ratio, concerns the percentage of revenue received from premiums that must be spent on benefits.

McDonald's is among the retailers and restaurant chains that offer a "mini-med" limited benefit. Most of these plans don't meet a 2011 requirement that they spend 80% to 85% of premiums on medical benefits instead of overhead expenses.
