An epic winter storm Wednesday buried more than a third of the United States in drifting snow, sleet and ice that brought air and road travel to a halt.

Snowstorms also paralyzed air transport, blocked operations in factories and caused schools to shut in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Ciudad Juarez mayor Hector Murgia said the temperatures of around minus 13 degrees centigrade (8.6 Fahrenheit) were the lowest recorded in almost 50 years.

CKE Restaurants Inc., the owner of the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's chains, is considering moving its headquarters from California to Texas. It could be an easy sell for the Lone Star State.

CEO Andrew Puzder and President Michael Murphy met with Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday for the first time to talk about the company's possible expansion. The move could mean 500 new jobs for Texas, which the company already had identified as a top growth market for its fast-food restaurants.

Austin, among other large Texas cities, would be a possible site for a new headquarters.

"We're going to do a lot of restaurant development in Texas over the next 10 years," Puzder said. "We're considering maybe moving some of the headquarters — or all of the headquarters — here if we have a good business reason to do so, because the tax structure is certainly right, and the business-friendly environment is right."

About three years ago, the state of Ohio passed a law severely limiting paycheck lending operations.

At the time, I had a commenter suggest that those weren't "quality" jobs. I'm guessing that he would consider someone pushing meat on the American public as non "quality".

I wonder if he would like to have those non quality jobs today?

Newt no more

I used to love Newt. I always thought he was a great thinker and an originator of provocative ideas.

I don't believe I could ever support him for president because he lacks executive experience and we can see where that's got us today. In addition, his marital fidelity issues I believe cast a pall on his character.

Regardless, his blatant arrogant support of ethanol subsidies tells me that he either 1) lacks the intestinal fortitude to tell the truth to power or 2) isn't that smart after all.............

The former Speaker blew through Des Moines last Tuesday for the Renewable Fuels Association summit, and his keynote speech to the ethanol lobby was as pious a tribute to the fuel made from corn and tax dollars as we've ever heard. Mr. Gingrich explained that "the big-city attacks" on ethanol subsidies are really attempts to deny prosperity to rural America, adding that "Obviously big urban newspapers want to kill it because it's working, and you wonder, 'What are their values?'"

Mr. Gingrich traced the roots of these supposed antipathies to the 1880s, an observation that he repeatedly tendered "as an historian." The Ph.D. and star pupil of futurist Alvin Toffler then singled out the Journal's long-held anti-ethanol views as "just plain flat intellectually wrong."

Mr. Gingrich is right that ethanol poses an intellectual problem, but it has nothing to do with a culture war between Des Moines and New York City. The real fight is between the House Republicans now trying to rationalize the federal fisc and the kind of corporate welfare that President Obama advanced in his State of the Union. We'll dwell on this problem not merely because Mr. Gingrich the historian brought it up, but because it and he illustrate so many of the snares facing the modern GOP.

This ranks right up there with Mitt Romney blatantly lying to Michigan voters in the last presidential campaign.

He might have received the support of some Iowa corn farmer somewhere be he definitely lost it with at least one Ohio voter.

Meet another mother of the year, Jennifer Cole, spawned by our ridiculous welfare system.

Why is Jennifer in the news?

Bond has been set at $14,500 for Jennifer Cole, the woman accused of overdosing in a restaurant bathroom in front of her three young kids.

Police say Cole and her three boys were at Noce's Pizzeria Friday when Cole went into the bathroom to inject heroin. A worker later heard the kids screaming, opened the bathroom door, and found Cole passed out on the floor.

Cole was taken to the hospital, then to the Hamilton County Justice Center. She's charged with three counts of child endangering.

Over the weekend, I watched the show "Shameless" starring William H Macy. If you ever wanted to see what the welfare state has created in this country, watch one episode of the show. It would be funny if there wasn't three kids in a pizza shop watching their mother OD on heroin in real life.

Apparently Meghan McCain is quite the knowledgeable columnist.

After all, she's the rage on all the talking head shows for her continued spitballs she throws at conservatives.

But just who is Meghan McCain? Surely she's a well accomplished business person and/or journalist (whatever a journalist is)?

Well I pulled up her Wiki page and here's what she has to say about her life experience.........

McCain is the oldest of the four children of John and Cindy Hensley McCain.^[3] She has been a public figure for most of her life, appearing at the 1996 Republican National Convention.^[6]

She was raised in Phoenix, Arizona and attended Phoenix Country Day School and Xavier College Preparatory, an all-girl Catholic high school. She attended Columbia University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in art history. McCain originally planned to become a music journalist and interned at Newsweek and Saturday Night Live.^[7]

Outside of getting coffee for Lorne Michaels, I can't find one job she's ever done that wasn't a result of her daddy relationship. No wonder she's a liberal.

Basically, she's Paris Hilton without a good sex tape. I guess that makes her opinion noteworthy.

It's already started

Yesterday, I had my first interaction with a ding bat who somehow felt like it was unfair for her to get Earned Income Credit when she had no earned income.

Here's a sample of the conversation.

Her I just had my taxes done at HR Block and they're telling me I can't claim him (pointing at her son) on my taxes?

Me I don't think it's a matter of not being able to claim him I just don't think it matters for you one way or another.

Her Well I had $8000 in unemployment income and all I get back is what they took out?

Me In order to claim Earned Income Credit, you need earned income. That means income from a job.

Her But I still don't get anything for him (again pointing at her son)?

Me In general, you can't get a refund for more than you paid in withholdings. Earned Income Credit and the Child Credit are the exceptions but, once again, you need earned income to qualify. If, instead of that unemployment income, your income came from a job. You would get about $4,000 in refundable credits.

Her I don't think it's fair that I don't get anything for him (once again giving me that motherly love pointing at her son who's name is apparently "Him")?

So once again, we have yet another derelict in this world who believes she's getting screwed because she's not getting something one of her skank friends is getting.

This is the class warfare that is being perpetuating in our society as a result of the tax code. If you wonder where the anger from tea partiers is coming from it's the people who did all the right things and have to pay to subsidize these idiots who go from one bad mistake to another, subsidized all the way.

How slowly government works

There is almost universal agreement that the 1099 law attached to a health care bill is a horrible law.

Even the people who stand to make out on the deal, accountants, universally hate the law and yet there it stands.

Now the Senate finally got 60 senators to sponsor a bill to repeal the provisions......

A bipartisan bill in the Senate that would repeal the unpopular 1099 provision in the healthcare law garnered 60 co-sponsors on Thursday, giving the legislation its best chance at passage so far.

Lawmakers have quickly signed onto the measure that would eliminate the requirement that businesses must file the forms to the IRS for every vendor with whom they have at least $600 in transactions since Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) introduced the bill on Tuesday.

"Today we hit the magic number 60 and I feel great about that," Johanns told The Hill on Thursday.

The measure has support of 45 Republicans and 15 Democrats -- Sens. Mark Begich (Alaska), Michael Bennet (Colo.), Maria Cantwell (Wash.), Kay Hagan (N.C.), Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), Manchin, Ben Nelson (Neb.), Mark Pryor (Ark.), Debbie Stabenow (Mich.), Jon Tester (Mont.), Mark Udall (Colo.), Mark Warner (Va.), Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.).

Johanns failed twice last year to push through a bill even Democrats, Republicans and the White House agreed that the provisions would place an "onerous burden" on businesses.

Let's do a pool. Today is January 28. Anyone want to pick an over/under date as to when this law will be passed and signed by the president (Obama has gone on record saying he will sign the legislation.).

I'm going to guess April 28, 2012.

Left-wing activists claimed responsibility for a minor explosion on Thursday at a hotel in Davos, close to where top executives and world leaders were meeting, but nobody was hurt.

Devin Wenig, CEO of Thomson Reuters' Markets division, was in a breakfast meeting of senior executives at the hotel when the explosion happened.

Texas just got more republican

The Republican-backed voter ID bill passed in the Texas Senate 19-11 Wednesday night.

After nearly 40 amendments offered and six hours of debate, the move to require Texans to present a photo ID before voting was one step closer to becoming a law.

While senators rejected a string of amendments to allow additional forms of photo ID, they approved giving Texans the ability to use concealed-handgun licenses to vote. The amendment passed 30-0, adding handgun licenses to the list of acceptable items: driver's license, passport, and military ID.

Though they were able to defeat similar bills in past sessions, Democrats acknowledged the inevitable passage of the bill this session. An overwhelming GOP majority gave the bill a much better chance, which was already apparent starting as the legislation cleared a committee of all senators and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst Tuesday evening.

Apparently, you can't pay for unicorns and time machines with fairy dust. It costs real money.

So says the fact checkers of last night's state of the union............

President Obama's agenda spelled out in his well-received State of the Union address would boost spending an additional $20 billion and lead to higher taxes, according to a line-by-line analysis from the National Taxpayers Union Foundation. [See photos of the Obamas behind the scenes.]

"President Obama's speech last night hinted at tax reform, and spending restraint, but also opened the door to tax increases and major spending initiatives," said NTUF Senior Policy Analyst Demian Brady. "Americans heard encouraging words about more efficient government, but little in the way of specifics about spending priorities. This leaves taxpayers wondering not only whether the federal budget deficit is headed upward or downward, but also by how much." [See a slide show of 5 reasons Obama is the same as Bush, Clinton.]

In their report provided to Whispers, the foundation conceded that the $20 billion in additional spending was far less than the additional $70 billion in his last State of the Union where he also called for a budget spending freeze and earmark ban.

Today’s CBO report has some bad news about the deficit. But CBO has some really, really bad news about Social Security: It’s officially broke.

The CBO’s revenue/expenditure estimates now place the program in permanent deficit. There had been some hope that payroll taxes would recover sufficiently post-recession to put the program back into the black (the theoretical black) for at least a few more years, putting off the day of reckoning for an election cycle or more. No more: The new CBO estimates put Social Security in the red for as far as the eye can see.

But there’s a bit of camouflage attached: If you include the “interest” that the federal government “owes” the fictitious Social Security “trust fund,” then the program is in the black. Which is to say, if you think that borrowing another $1 trillion from the bond market to shift money from one government account to another government account makes the nation $1 trillion richer, then everything’s hunky-dory. But if you compare the program’s tax income to its benefit outlays, without the “interest” owed, as CBO does, what you get is deficits from this year forward to 2021 of $45 billion, $30 billion, $28 billion, $30 billion, $31 billion, $33 billion, $44 billion, $59 billion, $77 billion, $98 billion, and $118 billion — by my always-suspect English-major math, about six-tenths of a trillion dollars in the hole.

But hey, don't they have those lock boxes full of IOU's they can cash in?

I just received my social security statement in the mail yesterday. According to the statement, my employers an I have kicked in $59,911 into the fund over my work history. The present value of that $59,911 is just over 93,000 yielding me a whopping 3.3% over the years.

I'll make a deal with social security. You give me back my original $59,000 in the form of a self directed IRA that can't be cashed out and I'll be more than willing to get out of the social security system completely.

I guarantee that 1) I'll at least have my original principle amount. 2) I'll earn a shit load more than 3.3% during my remaining life.

Send the money to my broker.

Why hasn't this been done already?

An Arizona lawmaker has reintroduced a proposal that would require presidential candidates to provide their birth certificates in order to remain on the ballot in the state.

The "birther bill," which state Rep. Judy Burges failed to get through the Arizona legislature last year, has already attracted more than 30 co-sponsors in both chambers. The proposal comes out of a fringe movement that believes President Obama, whose father was from Kenya, did not meet the citizenship requirements to run in 2008.

Though his campaign provided a Certification of Live Birth showing he was born in Hawaii, skeptics have called for the president to release the long-form birth certificate -- one of several documents required under the Arizona proposal.

Under Burges' bill, presidential campaign committees would have to provide an affidavit stating a candidate's citizenship and age. The bill would require along with that "an original long-form birth certificate that includes the date and place of birth, the names of the hospital and the attending physician and signatures of the witnesses in attendance."

Here's what I don't get. If I want to run for senate in the state of Ohio, apparently I don't have to file anything with the secretary of state proving that I'm 30 years old and/or a resident of the state.

Seriously, what keeps a 28 year old Kentuckian from getting on the ballot if there's no requirement otherwise?

I'm not a birther. John McCain was born in Panama. I believe The One was born in Hawai'i. Regardless, the fact that he's a socialist gives me plenty of reason not to vote for the guy.

But if it takes Obama to put in place something that should have been going on anyway. I'm OK with it.

Stuff liberals run - The USPS

Last week, I sent an assistant over to the post office to purchase postage.

Now I prefer stamps to meters because 1) it looks more professional 2) people are less inclined to think it's junk mail 3) I hate paying Stamps.com or Pitney Bowes $25.00 a month for a service that shouldn't cost me anything.

None the less, when my assistant came back she informed me that they were out of rolls of first class stamps and $.78 stamps (which is the three ounce postage).

This has been the third time in two months they have been out of rolls of first class stamps.

How can you be out of inventory for something that doesn't cost you anything?

Seriously, we're not talking about a grocery store being out of a perishable item, like milk or bread, where you're always trying to balance waste with available inventory. It costs the postal service nothing to have their inventory on hand.

I'm still a snail mail guy for a lot of things, like customer letters and bills. But if we can't even get the postage to even use the snail mail, then I need to move to plan B.

And I'll have to read the comments from the postal inspector about how people keep moving away from traditional mail.
