After shoveling snow all day, March 8th not less, I have to wonder... Where the hell is my global warming?

I think this storm is proof positive that global warming doesn't exist.

But Gordon don't be silly, one day does not a trend make.

Really? I would offer that neither does 20 years in the billion year life of of a universe.

Now how about some warming and melt some of this damn snow.

Why is Cuba so great?

The passage in this article caught my attention.

My question. Why are these people risking their lives to come to the US? Don't they know they have a far superior health care system in Cuba than we do?

It's one of the things I've always questioned about "progressives". Why is it they want to make our country, the greatest country in the history of humanity, more like a country where people are willing to die to leave.

It sure isn't the government health care.

People who'd voted enthusiastically for Obama said that as the Clinton campaign's death knell began ringing (or was that the theme music to "Anderson Cooper 360"?) they began to have second thoughts.

When everybody's a victim, nobody's a victim. Poor Ms. Gallagher can't appreciate the distinction between purely metaphorical chains and real ones, or even how offensive it might be to assume blithely that there's no difference whatsoever.

On the other hand, Barack's ancestors didn't come here in chains, either: His mother was a white Kansan, so was presumably undergoing menstrual hell with the Gallagher gals, and his dad was a black man a long way away in colonial Kenya. Indeed, Obama would be the first son of a British subject to serve as president since those slaveholding types elected in the early days of the republic. As some aggrieved black activist sniffed snootily on TV, Barack isn't really an "African American" – unless by "African American," you mean somebody whose parentage is half-American and half-African, and let's face it, no one would come up with so cockamamie a definition as that.

As for victims, you have to feel sorry for John Edwards. He was born in a mill. He weighed 1.6 pounds and what did his dad get? Another day older and deeper in debt. John spent most of the 19th century as a spindly 7-year-old sweep with rickets, cleaning chimneys in Dickensian London until Fagin spotted him and trained him up as a trial lawyer. And it worked swell in the 2004 primary but it counted for nothing this time round because, even with all that soot on his face, he's still a white boy.

Bill Richardson was the first Hispanic candidate but nobody needs a Hispanic called "Bill Richardson." Hillary assumed she'd be the last identity-politician standing in a field of bouffant poseurs like Joe Biden, only to discover that by the time she got to the final round the Democratic primary process had descended to near-parody – or, as The New York Times headline put it, a "Duel Of Historical Guilts."

That's one "historical guilt" too many. If it's Historical Guilt vs. Joe Biden and John Edwards, bet on Historical Guilt, and the Democratic base uniting around Hillary and baying "I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar." Instead, it's "I Am Woman, Hear Me Whine About The Unfairness Of It All," as the Clintonites go nuclear and accuse Obama, the ultimate cool black dude, of "imitating Ken Starr," the ultimate uptight squaresville honky.

A man who purposely caused a traffic crash with a lone female driver, then attacked and raped her when she stopped to exchange insurance information, will spend 46 years in prison.

At sentencing Friday, Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Alex Triantafilou called Triquero Terrell a "monster."

"You do not deserve to live among civilized society," Triantafilou told him.

A jury found the 27-year-old Lockland man guilty Thursday evening on five charges, including kidnapping, felonious assault, rape and attempted rape.

Assuming he wouldn't be in prison, do you think Triquero would vote for the hope of change offered by Obamamania or the status quo offered by John McCain?

As soon as I heard the weather forecast this morning, I knew we were all going to die in the next 24 hours.

But then I read this piece by the god father of modern day liberalism, George McGovern, and now I'm certain we don't have long to live.

Health-care paternalism creates another problem that's rarely mentioned: Many people can't afford the gold-plated health plans that are the only options available in their states.

Buying health insurance on the Internet and across state lines, where less expensive plans may be available, is prohibited by many state insurance commissions. Despite being able to buy car or home insurance with a mouse click, some state governments require their approved plans for purchase or none at all. It's as if states dictated that you had to buy a Mercedes or no car at all.

With payday lending, people in need of immediate money can borrow against their future paychecks, allowing emergency purchases or bill payments they could not otherwise make. The service comes at the cost of a significant fee -- usually $15 for every $100 borrowed for two weeks. But the cost seems reasonable when all your other options, such as bounced checks or skipped credit-card payments, are obviously more expensive and play havoc with your credit rating.

Anguished at the fact that payday lending isn't perfect, some people would outlaw the service entirely, or cap fees at such low levels that no lender will provide the service. Anyone who's familiar with the law of unintended consequences should be able to guess what happens next.

Here's a sample conversation from a client who moved here from New York. I have changed the names and municipalities to protect the innocent.

Gordon Jack you owe $490 to the city of Wyoming.

Client How do I owe that much to the city of Wyoming, I thought my employer withheld Wyoming tax from my check?

Gordon That's the school district tax.

Client School district tax?

Gordon Yes Wyoming school district has an income tax to fund their schools.

Client And they have a city tax? But I pay the city of Cincinnati city tax?

Gordon Well you pay the city the city tax for the city you work in as well as the city you reside in. Some cities allow a credit for the tax they pay to the city they work in, Wyoming does not.

Client So I pay 2.1% to the city of Cincinnati for working there, 1% to the city of Wyoming for living there, and 1% for the school district where I have no kids in the schools.

Gordon That's correct.

Client Jesus (&*%*^# ! I might as well move back to New York.

Gordon Or move to Texas and you'll automatically get a 4.1% raise.

Cook county secession

A Cook County community outside of Chicago isn't happy about the sales tax increase passed by the county. So much so they're looking to secede.

After calling on Cook County Board President Todd Stroger to personally "explain himself" for pushing through a sales tax increase, some angry Palatine Village Council members said they had an even better idea -- secede from the county.

Talk of tax revolt was in the air this week as officials, business owners and taxpayers throughout the region voiced outrage. But perhaps nowhere was the outrage more visible than in communities that share a border with lower-tax counties.

"What really gets me most is it's not only us: It's going to be the schools along with the village, the park district, any taxing body -- the dollars are going to shift from our area," said Council member Scott Lamerand, who was among those leading the push to explore withdrawing from the county.

Don't worry about seceding, the citizens are already doing it for you. They call it moving south.

Carbon as the enemy

I read this article on global warming and I saw this blurb.

I had no idea. So the first I thing I did when i got home was pulled out my shotgun and let my bag of charcoal briquettes have it.

A number of school district levies took a beating yesterday.

Now if you were one of those voters who think the schools need money and voted yes on a levy, the schools are expecting your check.

Seriously, why don't you cut a check to the schools, or are you the type that just want other people to pay the freight?

In Loveland, 4,314 voters voted yes to the levy. How much money do you think they'll kick in to the schools now that the levy has been defeated?

There is no law preventing anyone from providing a contribution to their local school district. For crying out loud, you can at least send them the $50 you pay for that license plate with your alma mater on it. I've commented before on people who will donate to their college endowment which needs no money v their local public school.

Just a hunch, but I'm thinking you won't be able to buy a happy meal with the money these folks will donate to the school system this year.
