Life in "progress" State - California edition

If you decided to set up a charity to help the children of, say, 9/11 victims and decided to pilfer the money for other projects; do you think you might have an issue with Johnny Law?

Yet if you do in California, they call that person Governor...........

After the 2001 terrorist attacks, California lawmakers sought a way to channel the patriotic fervour and use it to help victims' families and law enforcement. Their answer: specialty memorial license plates emblazoned with the words, 'We Will Never Forget.'

Part of the money raised through the sale of the plates was to fund scholarships for the children of California residents who perished in the attacks, while the majority - 85 per cent - was to help fund anti-terrorism efforts.

But an Associated Press review of the $15 million collected since lawmakers approved the 'California Memorial Scholarship Program' shows only a small fraction of the money went to scholarships.

Life in "Progress" City - Kabul edition

Sorry, it's not Kabul, they're in a war zone.

It's the Windy city where it's more dangerous............
A department spokesman would not confirm the tally, saying several incidents were still under investigation and could not be classified at this time.
According to the summaries, there have been at least 200 homicides so far this year compared with 134 during the same period in 2011. That's a 49.25 percent increase over last year.
On Tuesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy are expected to hold a news conference where they discuss two new crime reduction strategies.
The 10 people killed over the long weekend outnumber the four reported slain during the 2011 holiday weekend, when severe storms hit the Chicago area and forced many people inside.
Shootings are up nearly 14 percent over last year, according to the unofficial summaries. There have been 851 shootings so far in 2012 compared with 747 during the same period in 2011, the police data showed.
The seemingly worsening violence comes as the Emanuel administration touts its efforts to combat gang crime and add officers and resources to some of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods.
Remind of how republicans and/or conservatives are responsible for this?

There goes John Galt

New York State accounted for the biggest migration exodus of any state in the nation between 2000 and 2010, with 3.4 million residents leaving over that period, according to the Tax Foundation.

Over that decade the state gained 2.1 million, so net migration amounted to 1.3 million, representing a loss of $45.6 billion in income. Where are they escaping to?

The Tax Foundation found that more than 600,000 New York residents moved to Florida over the decade – opting perhaps for the Sunshine State’s more lenient tax system – taking nearly $20 billion in adjusted growth income with them.

But hey, if you're a liberal, you believe that if we can simply impose a national tax on those John Galt's, those awful nasty rich guys can't escape. Right?

Not so fast..............

Eduardo Saverin is not exactly your typical ex-American.

He's too rich to be that. But the newly minted Facebook (FB) billionaire, who renounced his U.S. citizenship last year in favor of Singapore, is part of a trend.

A small but growing number of Americans are turning in their passports.

Last year, the Treasury Department reported that 1,781 American citizens or long-time legal residents cut their ties with the U.S. This was up from 1,534 in 2010, 742 in 2009 and just 231 in 2008. There were 461 renunciations in the first quarter of 2012 alone. By comparison, the annual average for the 10 years from 1998 to 2007 was 497.

Remember the good old days when the world hated us for having an incompetent boob as our president?

Funny, I don't remember a world leader saying this.............

It’s a pity that this important ceremony was upstaged by ignorance and incompetence.”
