Who would have thunk it?

In a surprise to no one, it looks like the more the government gets involved in education the more expensive it gets.....

In a new NBER paper, "Accounting for the Rise in College Tuition," Grey Gordon and Aaron Hedlund create a sophisticated model of the college market and find that a large fraction of the increase in tuition can be explained by increases in subsidies.
With all factors present, net tuition increases from $6,100 to $12,559. As column 4 demonstrates, the demand shocks — which consist mostly of changes in financial aid — account for the lion’s share of the higher tuition.

Specifically, with demand shocks alone, equilibrium tuition rises by 102%, almost fully matching the 106% from the benchmark. By contrast, with all factors present except the demand shocks (column 7), net tuition only rises by 16%.
These results accord strongly with the Bennett hypothesis, which asserts that colleges respond to expansions of financial aid by increasing tuition.

So to boil this down to the bone. Universities know that you'll pay "x" for tuition. If the government gives you $1000, magically your tuition increase to x + $1000.

These guys didn't need a study, they just needed to read my blog.

Why I carry..........

Cincinnati police said a robbery victim fought back by shooting and killing his 16-year-old assailant late Thursday.

Officers responded to Jonathan Avenue near Fernside Place near Walnut Hills High School about 11:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting, said Captain Russ Neville, the night chief.

When police arrived, they said they a preliminary investigation determined a teen gunman tried to rob one of two contractors rehabilitating a home when the contractor walked outside to retrieve equipment from a van. The contractor turned over his wallet.

The second contractor came to the front door and saw what was occurring, Neville said.

The gunman tried to rob him of his wallet, too, but the man - who has told police he has a permit to carry a concealed gun - pulled out his firearm.

The robbery suspect fired several shots at the man, but he returned fire, striking the suspect several times, according to Neville,

Scott Adams of Dilbert fame has a great piece on accepting Muslim immigrants and the risk they present to our society.............

My political preferences don’t align with Trump on several issues. My interest in Trump is his talent for persuasion, which is astonishing. But critics are correct in saying that my blogging might be providing safety for a Hitler-in-waiting. I take that critique seriously, and so I will help you sort out your feelings on this issue.

Trump’s plan to discriminate against immigrants based on religion offends me to the core. I hope it offends you too, on some level. Religious freedom is about as basic an American right as you can get.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where we sometimes have to make hard choices based on our assessment of the odds. So let’s look at the odds.

Suppose you knew that 90% of Elbonians were in favor of killing U.S. citizens and they had plans to do so upon entering the country. Would you accept the bad ones to avoid discriminating against the good ones?

If you said you would let all Elbonians into the country and accept the certainty of more terror attacks, congratulations, you are not a racist. But if that risk seems too high, your only option is to go full-Hitler and ban people based on their Elbonian ethnicity. You can try screening each person, but if 90% of Elbonians are up to no good, some will slip through. I pause here to state unequivocally that no group has that many bad actors in it.

But what if only 1% of Elbonians are terrorists? If you let in a million Elbonians, that gives you 10,000 terrorists. Are you good with that risk in return for maintaining the ideal of equal treatment for all?

Why I hate the media

So the media is totally up in arms because Donald Trump claims to have witnessed Muslims celebrating on rooftops on 9/11

But do you think anyone is going to call bullshit on the president's whopper...........

“I think that as the science around climate change is more accepted, as people start realizing that even today you can put a price on the damage that climate change is doing —  you know, you go down to Miami and when it’s flooding at high tide on a sunny day and fish are swimming through the middle of the streets — you know, that there’s a cost to that,”

Or how about Glenn Kessler's review of Ted Cruz's claim that most criminals are democrats. Kessler offers no proof that Cruz's assertion is wrong (he simply doesn't like the study that backs Cruz's claim). In fact, he basically states that Cruz is correct but for the wrong reason. Nonetheless, he gives Cruz four pinocchios for his claim.

Do you think Kessler's going to do a fact check on this whopper?

“I mean, Nancy, I say this every time we’ve got one of these mass shootings. This just doesn’t happen in other countries.

Consider that Obama is saying this in Paris while they are still burying their dead after a mass shooting.

Geeeeez

How about enforcing the border

As appropriators work to craft an omnibus spending package to fund the federal government, one of them is making a pitch for additional funding to combat heroin.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is proposing a $600 million emergency supplemental for health care and law enforcement expenses associated with fighting the heroin epidemic that’s swept through communities across the country, including in the Democratic senator’s home state of New Hampshire.

Shaheen outlined her supplemental proposal early Monday, also sending a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell seeking Obama administration support for increased funding.

Every cop I talk to tells me that most of the heroin trade is coming up through Mexico.

So here's a novel idea. How about securing the freakin' border

The JV Team

As a kid, one of my dreams was to play in the NBA. Except for the height and talent, I probably would have made it.

As a sophomore in high school, I was being pressured by the track coach to give up basketball and run indoor track.

It was rare for a sophomore to play varsity ball back then so I talked to the coach to see what my chances were of playing on the varsity team as a sophomore.

After about five minutes of incessant laughter, I got the hint.

I didn't want to play JV ball so I went for the track deal.

With that said, If I had known the the JV team could put out a worldwide travel alert I might have reconsidered.......

Travel at your own risk.
Just in time for the holidays, the State Department issued a global travel alert to U.S. citizens warning of the increased likelihood of terror attacks by legions of terrorists — including the murderous Islamic State.

The terse warning, posted on the State Department website Monday, said American travelers should use “particular caution” in the coming weeks and through Feb. 24.

Conservativism - Protecting liberals from themselves.

One of the negative side effects of conservatism is that we can't fight for limited government but allow for people who want lots of government to have it. Ultimately, conservatism results in the protection of liberals against themselves. This photo illustrates the issue
