A 53-year-old man was arrested Saturday afternoon for allegedly raping a woman in broad daylight at Riverfront Park.

Spokane Police Officer Tim Moses says the rape happened just before 2 p.m. on the north side of the river, near the park fountain. He said the two were within sight of many families who were at the park to enjoy the nice day.

Witnesses initially called Riverfront Park Security, who responded to find 53-year-old Terry Thomas allegedly sexually assaulting a 27-year-old woman behind a large rock. When Spokane Police arrived Thomas became uncooperative and combative, but they were able to eventually arrested him.

According to the victim, she and Thomas had only met that day and were drinking in the park with another man. That man eventually left the two alone.
