Business owners will pay $4 billion more in taxes under President
Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA) than the Congressional Budget Office
had previously expected.
“According to the updated estimates, the amount of deficit
reduction from penalty payments and other effects on tax revenues under
the ACA will be $5 billion more than previously estimated,” the CBO
reported today.
“That change primarily effects a $4 billion increase in
collections from such payments by employers, a $1 billion increase in
such payments by individuals, and an increase of less than $500 million
in tax revenues stemming from a small reduction in employment-based
coverage, which will lead to a larger share of total compensation taking
the form of taxable wages and salaries and a smaller share taking the
form of nontaxable health benefits.”
In short, CBO revised the Obamacare tax burden upward by $4 billion
for businesses and $1 billion to $1.5 billion for individual workers.

A young woman has died after having a second-trimester abortion at a Chicago-area Planned Parenthood clinic.
Tonya Reaves, 24, died late Friday night, according to a local CBS
television station, of hemorrhage, with a cervical dilation and
evacuation, according to the medical examiner’s office following an
autopsy after the abortion that claimed her life.
CBS Chicago said Reaves died after the abortion she had at 18 S.
Michigan Avenue Planned Parenthood facility. The woman was transported
from the Loop Health Center Planned Parenthood abortion clinic to
Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 11:20
P.M.

Take last night in Chicago............
Four teens – two 13-year-olds and two 16-year-olds – were shot within
a half hour in the city's Englewood and Gresham neighborhoods on the
South Side, according to police.
The four were among at least 10 people shot overnight in attacks on the city's South and West Sides.
Three
boys, ages 13, 16 and 16, were walking in the 7100 block of South
Loomis Boulevard in the Englewood neighborhood about 11:25 p.m. Saturday
when two others approached them on foot and started shooting. The
13-year-old was shot in the left hand and right shoulder and was taken
to Advocate Christ Medical Center, Chicago Police Department News
Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened in the 400
block of North Austin Boulevard, after a man intervened in a domestic
argument between the suspect and a woman, police said. The suspect left
to get a handgun, then returned about 12:50 a.m. on Saturday and opened
fire, striking the man and two other people.
Akil Partee, 19, of the 5900 block of West Lake Street
was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s
office. A 29-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and was in critical
condition at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. A 20-year-old
man was shot in the buttocks and taken in fair condition to John H.
Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Authorities think the gunman may
have shot the men from a light-colored vehicle.
Another man died after he was shot in the abdomen in
the 4200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue at 1:46 a.m, police said. Pablo
Hernandez, 41, of the 3500 block of South 60th Court in Cicero, was
pronounced dead at Masonic at 3:37 a.m., according to medical examiner’s
office.
About 6 a.m. on Saturday in the 4500 block of South
Wood Street, a 37-year-old man was shot by a man he had apparently been
in a fight with earlier in the morning, police said. The other man
returned to the scene with a semi-automatic handgun and fired several
shots at the victim, police said. The victim was taken to John H.
Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead,
according to police. The shooting may have been gang-related.
At least 21 other people were hurt in shootings on the South and West Sides since about 8 p.m. Friday evening.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you
some help. There was a great coach somewhere in your life. Somebody
helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that
allowed you to thrive. Fans invested in teams and teammates. If you’re in the Hall of Fame—you didn’t do that.
Somebody else made that happen. The internet didn’t get invented on its
own. Government research created the internet so that all the companies
could make money off the internet.
The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

Mr. Obama has spent an average of 138 minutes a week in economic meetings.
According to a study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, new dog owners spent an average of 130 minutes a week walking their dogs.
The study, which was based upon the president’s official schedule, practically bent over backwards to include anything even remotely akin to an economic meeting. For example, “Obama meets with Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum” was tallied as an economic meeting. Also included was, “Obama meets with Cabinet secretaries,” which may or may not have dealt with economic issues, counted as well.
The more I hear this petulant, asshole spew this bullshit, the more I think of my classmates from West Elementary School in Lancaster, OH.
Nearly every kid in my class was from a working class family.
We all had the same teachers and familiar enough family backgrounds that you could say that we all started from the same starting line.
Yet I'm sure that if you could rank all the kids by some objective standards, you would probably find that the most successful of our class did some crazy shit......like defer immediate gratification for something better long term.
So instead of knocking up a girlfriend, the successful kids were studying. Instead of rolling a bag of weed into doobies, the successful kids were bagging groceries. Instead of dropping out of high school, the successful kids developed some marketable skills.
I know of one of my classmates from West Elementary who's probably making at least a half a mill a year as a partner in a national accounting firm.
I don't begrudge his success one iota even though we're in the same profession.
Why?
He went to Ohio State and worked his ass off while I was at the University of Cincinnati sleeping through class. .... if I went at all.
He's transferred his family across the country taking positions in Atlanta and other points of origin.... something I never would have ever done.
So how much should Phil pay for the exact same infrastructure that was provided for everyone at West Elementary?
If he's making a half a million a year, he's paying at least 200k in federal, state and local taxes. How much more should he pay for the very f%&*in' teachers and roads and bridges and police/fire departments I had access to?
Conversely, how much more should I pay for the low life piles of shit who were drinking and partying while I was studying for the CPA exam?
I own a business. I pay for those roads, teachers etc. with every gallon of gas I buy, every real estate tax check I cut, and I pay more in taxes and get a hell of lot less in government services than your average Joe.
The fact is that life is a series of forks in the road. You can have the best teachers, roads, bridges, cops etc. but your success (or lack there of) will be completely related to the decisions you make in life. In general, the more you're willing to delay gratification for something bigger later......the more successful you're going to be.
Ernst and Young on the Obamaunist tax plan.............
Allowing tax rates for the country’s highest earners to rise, an idea
endorsed by top Democrats, would have a dire effect on the economic
recovery, according to a new report prepared for business groups that was released Tuesday.
The
study from Ernst & Young found that letting tax rates for the
wealthiest Americans lapse would sap $200 billion and some 700,000 jobs
out of the economy, reduce wages by 1.8 percent and lead to a decrease
in investment.
The consequences of the city’s fiscal crisis took a trashy turn during a hearing Monday night when San Bernardino officials noted garbage pick-up was among the obligations they might not be able to afford after turning their government into a cash-only operation.
CBS2 reporter Jeff Nguyen reports the City of San Bernardino can no longer pay for anything on credit, such as gasoline for its fleet of garbage pick-uptrucks. As a result, taxpayers may be left holding the bag for taking away their trash promptly as early as Wednesday.
“The trash and the streets are not going to be swept,” warned city sanitation worker Jerry Zuniga. “You leave the trash there for too long, it’s going to be health issue.”

So what does a world without conservatives look like?

"I believe that if we're successful in this
election," President Obama told campaign donors in Minnesota last month,
"that the fever may break, because there's a tradition in the
Republican Party of more common sense than that."
Apparently Obama believes that if he wins
this November, Republicans on Capitol Hill will all begin to act like
Chief Justice John Roberts by betraying their conservative beliefs and
signing on to Obama's unprecedented expansion of the federal welfare
state. But what would America look like if the Republican "fever" did
break?
We already know. It would look a lot like the
state of California, where no non-cyborg Republican has been governor
since 1996. Democrats have also enjoyed complete control of the state
legislature since 1997. And they have governed exactly the way you'd
expect Democrats to govern.
Spending has more than doubled, from $45.4
billion in 1996 to more than $92.5 billion today. Income, sales and car
taxes have all been hiked. As a result, California has the most
progressive income tax system in the nation, with seven income tax
brackets, and the second-highest top marginal rate.
Even with all those tax hikes, California's
2012 budget is still $15.7 billion in the red. So what does Gov. Jerry
Brown want to do? Raise taxes again, of course. He has proposed a ballot
initiative that would: 1) raise sales taxes on everyone and 2) raise
incomes taxes on those making more than $250,000 a year (like Obama has
proposed to do nationally). But even this $8.5 billion tax hike would
still leave the state $7.5 billion short. Where will California get that
money? Who knows?
I'm still preaching to the masses about "going Galt".

Because we have a population of people who think that money just appears magically. Even our president refuses to give credit to the people who really make this country run...........

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced a swathe of new taxes and
spending cuts on Wednesday designed to slash 65 billion euros from the
budget deficit by 2014 as recession-plagued Spain struggles to meet tough targets agreed with Europe.
Rajoy, of the center-right People's Party,
proposed a 3-point hike in the main rate of Value Added Tax on goods and
services to 21 percent, and outlined cuts in unemploymentbenefit and civil service pay and perks in a parliamentary speech interrupted by jeers and boos from the opposition.
"These
measures are not pleasant, but they are necessary. Our public spending
exceeds our income by tens of billions of euros," Rajoy told parliament.
He also announced new indirect taxes on energy,
plans to privatize ports, airports and rail assets, and a reversal of
property tax breaks that his party had restored last December.
San Bernardino on Tuesday became the third California city in less than a
month to seek bankruptcy protection, with officials saying the
financial situation had become so dire that it could not cover payroll
through the summer.
The unexpected vote came at the suggestion of the interim city manager,
who said the city faces a $46-million deficit and depleted coffers.
"We have an immediate cash flow
issue," Andrea Miller told the mayor and seven-member City Council.
Mayor Patrick Morris called the decision, passed on a 4-2 vote, a
"stain" on the city. But he said the only other option was "draconian
cuts" to all city services, including the police and fire departments.
"It means the bills will be paid," said a dejected Morris, who is not a voting member of the council.
The city's fiscal crisis has been years in the making, compounded by the
nation's crushing recession and exacerbated by escalating pension
costs, lucrative labor agreements, Sacramento's raid on redevelopment
funds and a city reserve that is tapped out, officials said.
A new report says wealthy Maryland residents may be moving out due to recent tax hikes – a finding that is sure to escalate the battle over taxing the American rich. The study, by the anti-tax group Change Maryland, says that a net 31,000 residents left the state between 2007 and 2010, the tenure of a "millionaire's tax" pushed through by Gov. Martin O'Malley. The tax, which expired in 2010, in imposed a rate of 6.25 percent on incomes of more than $1 million a year. The Change Maryland study found that the tax cost Maryland $1.7 billion in lost tax revenues. A county-by-county analysis by Change Maryland also found that the state’s wealthiest counties also had some of the largest population outflows. In total, Maryland has added 24 new taxes or fees in recent years, Change Maryland says. Florida, which has no income-tax, has been a large recipient of Maryland's exiled wealthy.
Employees of a Pennsylvania city, who have all seen their salaries cut
to minimum wage as the mayor grapples with budget problems, are hoping a
judge restores their paychecks in full.
Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty cut everyone's pay -- including his own --
on Friday, saying the state's sixth-largest city is broke because the
City Council blocked his proposed tax increase. Doherty, a Democrat,
warned nearly 400 police officers, firefighters and public works
employees about his doomsday plan, prompting a Lackawanna County judge
to order the city to pay full wages to all employees, citing that it is a
violation of their contracts. Hours later, the payday envelopes went
out, and, despite the judge's order, they were light.
“This needs to be resolved," Scranton firefighter and president of the
local firefighters union John Judge told FoxNews.com. "My members are
getting a check for $7.25 an hour. These are people that are the head of
their households. They have mortgages. They have other living costs.
They are now going to have to throw their bills in a hat and randomly
pick what gets paid on time.”
Edward Demase, a Blue Line operator, was in jail for three months on a domestic assault conviction, WCVB-TV reports. He claimed sick leave during the extended absence, and returned to his job after he got out, according to the report.
Denise Rich, the wealthy socialite and former wife of pardoned billionaire trader Marc Rich, has given up her U.S. citizenship - and, with it, much of her U.S. tax bill.
Rich, 68, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and glossy figure in Democratic and European royalty circles, renounced her American passport in November, according to her lawyer.
Her maiden name, Denise Eisenberg, appeared in the Federal Register on April 30 in a quarterly list of Americans who renounced their U.S. citizenship and permanent residents who handed in their green cards.
By dumping her U.S. passport, Rich likely will save tens of millions of dollars or more in U.S. taxes over the long haul, tax lawyers say.
Rich, who wrote songs recorded by Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige and Jessica Simpson, is the latest bold-faced name to join a wave of wealthy people renouncing their American citizenship. Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin gave up his U.S. passport to become a citizen of Singapore, an offshore tax haven, before the company's initial public offering in May.
Nearly 1,800 citizens and permanent residents, a record since data was first compiled in 1998, expatriated last year, according to government figures.

Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer dismissed senior linebacker Storm Klein
from the football team on Saturday following his arrest on domestic
violence and assault charges.
Klein pleaded not guilty to the charges on Saturday after being arrested by Columbus police on Friday.
A message seeking comment was left Saturday.
Meyer said in a statement that the charges against Klein "violate the core values of the Ohio State Football Program."
"As
a result, Storm has been removed from the team. It has been made very
clear that this type of charge will result in dismissal. If there are
any changes in the charges, we will re-evaluate his status," Meyer said.
Klein
appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court on Saturday represented by a
public defender. The senior who started 10 games last year was told to
stay away from the person who filed a complaint against him.
Klein is one of several linebackers vying for a starting job with the Buckeyes.
The
university says Klein is a sport and leisure studies major from Newark,
Ohio, who played in 38 games and started 10 times at middle linebacker
last year.

In 2010, influenced by the Tea Party and its focus on fiscal issues, 17 states elected Republican governors. And, according to an Examiner.com analysis,
every one of those states saw a drop in their unemployment rates since
January of 2011.
Furthermore, the average drop in the unemployment rate
in these states was 1.35%, compared to the national decline of .9%,
which means, according to the analysis, that the job market in these
Republican states is improving 50% faster than the national rate.
Since January of 2011, here is how much
the unemployment rate declined in each of the 17 states that elected
Republican governors in 2010, according to the Examiner:
Kansas - 6.9% to 6.1% = a decline of 0.8%
Maine - 8.0% to 7.4% = a decline of 0.6%
Michigan - 10.9% to 8.5% = a decline of 2.4%
New Mexico - 7.7% to 6.7% = a decline of 1.0%
Oklahoma - 6.2% to 4.8% = a decline of 1.4%
Pennsylvania - 8.0% to 7.4% = a decline of 0.6%
Tennessee - 9.5% to 7.9% = a decline of 1.6%
Wisconsin - 7.7% to 6.8% = a decline of 0.9%
Wyoming - 6.3% to 5.2% = a decline of 1.1%
Alabama - 9.3% to 7.4% = a decline of 1.9%

On the other hand, the unemployment rate in states that
elected Democrats in 2010 dropped, on average, as much as the national
rate decline and, in some states such as New York, the unemployment rate
has risen since January of 2011.
During the 2012 Red, White & Boom celebration, there were dozens of police officers at the
fireworks. Most of these officers were clumped in bunches near the Scioto River and simply watched
the fireworks along with the hundreds of thousands of spectators.
After the show ended and people started walking back to their cars, things turned violent. A
gang of approximately 30 black youths (both male and female) started walking and running down Broad
Street and randomly assaulted white people — old people, children, women.
I was first aware of the violence in front of the church at the corner of Third and Broad
streets. One block east of there, a man crossed the street through the traffic holding his crying
son. They clearly had been assaulted. When others asked if they were OK, he said, “No, we're not
OK; we got separated from my wife and daughter, and they're still over there.”
Finally, two Columbus officers were seen slowly walking toward the scene of this violence. At
this point, the black youths crossed the street to the opposite side of the officers and started
randomly attacking more white people on the north side of Broad Street. I know; I was assaulted by
five different youths.
At this time, the police meandered to our side of the street. Some of us went to the officers
and said, “Do something, innocent people are getting assaulted right here on Broad Street.” One
officer replied, “We don't have enough officers.” After seeing the dozens of officers near the
riverfront, I went home feeling this officer’s answer was a poor one.

It seems to me that the last time that I "tried hard" but turned in a stinker was when I was twelve playing baseball. I went 2 for 13 that season with 9 walks and 11 strikeouts.

Twelve people, including a 14-year-old boy, were wounded by gunfire across the city Friday night and Saturday morning.
The
teen was shot in the 12400 block of South Perry Avenue in the West
Pullman neighborhood about 8:35 p.m. He was shot in the back and leg and
taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition has stabilized,
police said. He was standing on the sidewalk when someone stepped out
from between houses and started shooting.
Someone shot a
38-year-old man in the shin about 3:10 a.m. near Wabash Avenue and 56th
Street in the Washington Park neighborhood, police said. About a half
hour earlier, a male was shot in the leg in the 8200 block of South
Langley Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood. Additional information about
both shootings wasn't available.
A 52-year-old man was shot
about 1:45 a.m. near Division Street and Maplewood Avenue in the
Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said. He was shot in the shoulder and
groin and taken to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center and
transferred to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, police

To find out more about where Obama stands with his potential donors, Business Insider spoke with fireworks magnate Bruce Zoldan, a prominent political fundraiser from Ohio's Mahoning Valley, where Obama campaigned Friday morning.
A major Clinton backer who has raised money for candidates
from both parties, Zoldan was an early supporter of Obama in 2008, and
even hosted the candidate for a fundraiser at his home in Canfield, Ohio
— but he was noncommittal about whether he would be supporting the
Democratic nominee this time around. He told Business Insider that he has been turned off by the Obama campaign's rhetoric on class war and income inequality, which he sees as unnecessarily divisive and antagonistic toward businessowners.
"They talk too much about taxing the rich,"
said Zoldan, founder and CEO of the multimillion-dollar Phantom
Fireworks empire. "Tax is not an issue with me — I pay my taxes and I'm
happy to do it. But they are too focused on the idea that it is the rich people who are keeping down the poor."
"I'm not opposed to Democrats on this issue," he added.
"What bothers me is to hear that he is making employees — my team
members — feel that I am somehow being unfair to them, like I am the bad
guy."
The attacks against Mitt Romney's wealth and record at Bain Capital fit into the message that "anybody
in business who is successful has done something unfair to make them
successful," he said. "I'm looking for more common ground."
Zoldan also said that he was surprised by the Obama campaign's lack of outreach to businessleaders in Ohio. He
said was invited to attend Friday morning's event in Poland, Ohio, but
was told it was unlikely he would get any one-on-one time with the
President.
"That doesn't happen with this administration — I don't think he has reached out to the community in the way that he should," Zoldan said, adding that "it wasn't like this under Clinton."
"It wasn't this divisive, and I'm not sure that he
[Obama] helps himself," Zoldan said. "The business community wasn't
pro-Clinton, but it was never this hateful."
I saw your thought on employers going Galt due to Obama administration overreach.
I own a small company that I downsized from nine employees to one over the course of this recession. Mostly out of necessity.
I was speaking this morning with another business owner who did the same. His quote on this was, “I’ll be damned if I’m going to create another job in this environment.”
I have to agree. It has become more and more onerous to add
full-time employees. Even if you have the work, you have to measure
improvement in revenue against the additional hassle and costs. Also,
you have to look at how much of that additional money you’re going to
have to fork over to the government.
A lot of those things have been there for a long time, but additionally we’re being told we’re evil and greedy. The owner is always the last one paid in a small business. Sometimes
he or she doesn’t get paid, if it would hurt the business.
With all those factors, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone when
business owners don’t create more jobs. They should be surprised they
actually do create a single job.
Again, my request from everyone is that you simply forgo purchases of nonessential products and services until the election and let's see what happens to the economy at that point...........

Despite voter polls turning hard against a proposed $68 billion
high-speed train from San Francisco to Los Angeles (by way of
Fresno and Merced), the state Senate pulled the trigger on the
initial funding today.
Four Democratic senators turned against the project, but it
wasn’t enough. The final vote tally was 21-16 (with three
no-shows). Two of the yes votes came in the last seconds of the
roll call.
Here's the wager I throw out to any proponent of these kinds of projects.
I will bet my life savings against your that this project will come in
1) Over budget
2) Under utilized
3) Once completed, will require additional public assistance to maintain.
In actuality, I'd make the bet that this project will not come in on any one of those.
Now, let's assume you are a fan of such projects, why won't you take my up on my bet? Because that's totally the point. You're more than willing to gamble other people's money at one of these boondoggles but not your own.
But then again, that's becoming the American Way isn't it?
Minneapolis is running into a problem nearly all high rent/high tax ares are finding............
The fight for your lunch dollar is heating up in
downtown Minneapolis. Some businesses claim that food trucks are hurting
their bottom line, and they say the city is giving street food vendors
an unfair advantage over brick and mortar stores.
“The trucks park in front of our doors and hijack our customers,”
said Doug Sams, founder of D. Brian’s Deli & Catering. Sams says
food trucks have hurt his sales by about five percent.
“A five percent drop in sales could be all of your profits, could be
fifty percent of your profits, it’s a major impact on the way you’re
doing business,” he said.
The biggest complaint Sams, and some other downtown business owners
have made, is that instead of paying property taxes, all food trucks
have to do is feed the meter. That’s an argument most food truck
operators reject.
“We all have to work in a licensed Minneapolis kitchen, so therefore
we are paying property taxes, just not in the downtown area,” said Kyle
Olson, owner of the Get Sauced food truck. “We also do pay the meter
every day for the time that we are here; we also participate in sales
tax as well.”
My libertarian in me says have at it food trucks. except for the fact that they use the very (expensive at that) infrastructure paid for by the restaurants and other for profit businesses.
Years ago, one of my banking customers complained to the city of Cincinnati for the street vendors lined up all along Race Street making it inconvenient for his customers to navigate the multitudes of knock off merchandise to get to his store.
The city made his decision for him as they decided to do nothing and he moved his operation to a store in Kenwood.
Walk Race Street today and see how many of those street vendors are there. No so many since race Street is practically a ghost town.
Of course, I'm not in the media pool covering the President because if I were the president would get a question like this when blaming the sour economy on Europe and China........
Mr. President, is it possible that those economies are struggling because our economy sucks right now and not the other way around?

A couple of weeks ago, one of my public employee relatives started whining about Scott Walker and his attacks on public employees.
He also tried to pass off the Obama canard that unemployment was high because of layoffs in the public sector.
I tried to give him an education in basic economics that there can be no public employees of any kind without private commerce to generate the money to fund it.
For instance, if a deserted island were suddenly inhabited by a 100 people, is a cop, fire fighter or teacher the first employee needed? Of course not. Those services can only be paid for once someone has some property to protect and income to pay for the service. And that can only happen when someone can provide a service or good to a consumer for less than the consumer can do it for themselves..
As a result, I think the public needs an education as to how an economy works.
So I'm calling for everyone in this country to Go Galt!

Let's just say that between now and the election, everyone defer purchases they would like to have but not necessarily need.
In our household, my wife wants a bathroom built into my "mancave". I've told her we can do whatever she wants as long as it happens after the election.
I want a cap for my pickup bed. Not something I need and can easily defer through the election. When we go out, I'm forgoing alcohol.
My office could use a couple of new computers and the plumbing needs replaced. December sounds like a good month to do that.
If you want a new car or TV but the old one will do for a few more months, just wait.
It's not like we'd ruin the economy. Consider it a Cash for Clunkers in reverse. Instead of front loading consumption like the cash for clunkers program; we're simply deferring it.
Let's assume everyone in the country does this, who do you think gets hurt the most? Warren Buffett, George Soros or your average working stiff?
Of course, a typical liberal will try to say we're trying to destroy our economy because we're racist, sexist etc. To which we can easily respond that we're simply reducing our carbon footprints.

My wife is an RN and she deals with more and more patients who need bariatric beds because their weight exceeds 500 lbs. Many of these people are in their early thirties and on disability. They are nothing more than eating and shitting machines who we taxpayers support.

We have people who bought way more house than they could ever support in the hopes of "flipping" it into a better house. Now we have legions of people living rent free in $500k homes for more than three years while foreclosure takes place.

Ashake Banks said she opened a candy stand on the street of her North
Austin block two weeks ago to keep kids close to their homes and maybe
away from gang crossfire.
Late Wednesday night, Banks' 7-year-old
daughter Heaven was sitting next to Banks as she sold snacks and snow
cones when someone opened fire down the street around 10:45 p.m. A stray
bullet hit the little girl as she ran back to her house in the 1700
block of North Luna Avenue, police and family say. She died half an hour
later.
"I opened up the candy store for the kids so they
wouldn't have to be pulled back and forth on the block because there's
been so much shooting," Banks said this morning. "I figured they (gang
members) know us, they wouldn't come to the neighborhood and start
shooting, but they really didn't even care.
"She looked forward
every day to opening up the candy store, and for somebody just to come
take her life, it's not right," Banks said.
If I were one of the parents, I think I'd ask "so son, how much money and time have you contributed to these beliefs given that you live in our basement rent free".

weeks of guaranteed annual vacation leave. But it was not clear just
how sacrosanct that time off was until Thursday, when Europe’s highest
court ruled that workers who happened to get sick on vacation were
legally entitled to take another vacation.
“The purpose of entitlement to paid annual leave is to enable the worker
to rest and enjoy a period of relaxation and leisure,” the Court of
Justice of the European Union, based in Luxembourg, ruled in a case involving department store workers in Spain. “The purpose of entitlement to sick leave is different, since it enables a worker to recover from an illness that has caused him to be unfit for work.”
With much of Europe mired in recession, governments struggling to reduce
budget deficits and officials trying to combat high unemployment, the
ruling is a reminder of just how hard it is to shake up long-established
and legally protected labor practices that make it hard to put more
people to work and revive sinking economies.
Little League baseball player Matthew Migliaccio is 13 now, but he
was 11 years old when he overthrew a baseball causing it to go over a
fence and hit Elizabeth Lloyd in the face as she was seated at a picnic
table 5 feet away, according to her. Not only is she suing on two counts,
"Lloyd's husband, in a third count, is suing for the loss of "services,
society and consortium" of his wife. They've demanded a jury trial." According to the Asbury Park Press, the total damages amount to $500,000, "Lloyd, 45, of the Whiting section of Manchester, recently filed a lawsuit against the teen, seeking $500,000 in damages." According to the lawsuit, Lloyd contends Matthew intentionally struck her, causing permanent injuries. Mian said the suit was filed after attempts to reach a settlement with insurancecompanies
failed. “He throws his best fast ball over the bullpen into the picnic
area, striking my client in the face,” Mian said. “Life is now
different for my client.” Mian said Lloyd – who was taken to a hospital
emergency room after the May 2010 incident – had to undergo
reconstructive surgery and suffers from headaches.
What was Obama's security detail thinking? They took away
the Latinos' knives and forks before Obama entered and spoke, but

A 14-year-old Phoenix boy shot an intruder who broke into his home
while brandishing a gun as the teenager watched his three younger
siblings, police said.
The teen and his brothers and sisters were at home alone at their
residence at 55th Avenue and Baseline when a woman rang the doorbell
Friday. The teen didn't open the door because he didn't recognize her,
Police Officer James Holmes said Saturday.
Soon after, the teen heard a bang on the door, rushed his siblings
upstairs and got a handgun from his parent's bedroom. When he got to the
top of the stairs, he saw a man breaking through the front door and
point a gun at him.
The boy shot the 37-year-old man, who is in critical condition but expected to survive and be booked into jail.

Nelson Hamm, who lives in Devou Park, says he was sitting on his couch Thursday afternoon when he noticed his 3-year-old Golden Retriever, Nala, run up to the mail truck.
"He started up and I said, ‘get outta there Nala, get outta there,' and he started up over her, but he couldn't get all the way over her head and neck," said Hamm, "He backed down and went up again and couldn't get over her, then he backed up a third time and the tires were spinning and smoke was coming out of her neck."
At first, Hamm thought Nala was okay.
"She got up and I thought, ‘My God she's alright,' but she wasn't," said Hamm. "She came inside the door, fell on the floor and I kissed her nose and she licked me and dropped dead."
Hamm said the mailman went up the street and went about his business like nothing happened. "My buddy who he delivered some stuff to said, ‘Did you see how fast that guy was going?' and I said, ‘Yea, I saw him,'" said Hamm. "He said, ‘I wonder why?' and I said, ‘I know why. My dog's laying there dead in the house."
The postal inspector in Covington is investigating the matter, but told Hamm's neighbors that the carrier admitted to running over the dog. The carrier told his boss that he saw the dog go back inside the house and didn't realize the dog had died.

Illinois lawmakers have found a way to whittle $1.3 billion from
state government’s massive backlog of unpaid bills, but it comes too
late for The Counseling Center of Lake View.
The Chicago
nonprofit, a mental health services provider, shut down at the end of
April, waiting on about $200,000 in state money.
Anticipating an
annual summer stall in the already-slow payments and eroded by years of
cuts in state funding, Executive Director Sharon Kayser said the agency
opted to close and find new places for 400 clients rather than continue
to slowly fade away.
“It’s really hard to put together a budget
and run a business with that level of uncertainty. Payments, they
typically stop around May and don’t pick up again until September,” she
said Thursday as she tied up the center’s loose ends. “It was only going
to get worse.”
Across Illinois, the now $8.5 billion backlog has
become a fact of life for people doing business with the state.
As The
Associated Press reported in a series last fall, the state has turned to
a deliberate policy of not paying billions of dollars in bills for
months at a time, creating a cycle of hardship and sacrifice for
residents and businesses helping the state carry out some of its most
crucial tasks.
Public schools, as of late May, are waiting on $562
million, social services $329 million and Medicaid $944 million,
according to the state Comptroller’s Office. While the damage has been
extreme for Illinoisans like Kayser, others have found ways to deal with
what they call the new normal, such as service cuts and funding from
other sources, including the federal government, private grants and
donations.
How are conservatives responsible for this............
Another weekend of shootings in Chicago had claimed six lives and
wounded dozens more as of Sunday evening, police said. The shootings
occurred from late Friday afternoon through Sunday across the city.
About 40 people suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds in just 22 incidents
during the weekend, according to a Tribune tally.
Two people were
killed in shootings from Saturday night into Sunday morning. Police
officials on Sunday were still compiling a list of confirmed shootings
and victims during the hectic overnight period that saw officers in some
districts racing from one shooting to another.
One fatality, a
16-year-old boy, died after being shot on the porch of his Southwest
Side home about 8 p.m. Saturday, police said. Joseph Briggs, of the 6100
block of South Rockwell Street, was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. at
Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Also killed overnight was Donnell Smith, 50, who was shot in the
stomach about 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the 7500 block of South Drexel Avenue
in the Grand Crossing neighborhood. Smith, of the 8100 block of South
Talman Avenue, was first taken to Jackson Park
Hospital before being transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of
Cook County where he was pronounced dead at 10:11 a.m., according to the
medical examiner's office.
It's a good thing Chicago has tough gun laws. Otherwise, someone might get shot.
A billionaire Chicago family that has donated and raised hundreds of
thousands of dollars for President Obama got a deal from the federal government
to avoid paying all of a $460 million settlement it agreed to in the
2001 failure of a Chicago-area bank it owned, while 1,400 former
depositors are still owed more than $10 million in lost savings.
And now, 11 years later, the prospect that any of the depositors will get their money back is bleak.
The Pritzker family,
which made its fortune in hotels and manufacturing, agreed to a $460
million settlement offer in December 2001 to avoid sanctions and civil
lawsuits in the failure of Superior Bank in Hinsdale, Ill.
But after paying $316 million of the interest-free debt, the family quietly struck a deal with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) in June 2011 to discount the balance in return for paying off the debt early.
“We have been stiffed again,” said Fran Sweet,
67, a depositor still owed $70,000. “It is a lot to lose. We are not
wealthy people. We are white-collar and blue-collar workers who saved
this money, [or] thought we saved this money.”
