Why do we let government control education

Jeff Jacoby with a great piece on the stranglehold teacher's unions have on government schools and the democratic party.

Money quote

Nobody would want the government to run 90 percent of the nation's entertainment industry. Nobody thinks that 90 percent of all housing should be owned by the state. Yet the government's control of 90 percent of the nation's schools leaves most Americans strangely unconcerned.

Gordon;

Having lived in RI, VA, GA, NC, and OH, besides RI, OH has one of the strongest holds. While I worked as a substitute in southwestern Ohio teachers would tell me they had no use for the union and really wanted to form their own local independent union. But because of the amount of power that comes down from the national level through the state they believed they were powerless to fight an “association” they did not want to be apart of.

Unfortunately, the ORP has gotten into big with the OEA, so we won’t get any support from them.
