Why?
Because it makes you a target for black mail or extortion.
Case in point, John Ensign, Nevada senator.
Political insiders in Nevada and in the Senate said that Ensign decided to acknowledge the affair publicly after the husband of the woman he had been seeing asked him for a substantial sum of money.
Now what if Ensign wasn't so willing to come forward and his blackmailer wasn't looking for money but government secrets and/or cover.
You never need to worry about what people tell you; it's the stuff they won't you need to worry about.

This is exactly why integrity matters. Members of the military and intelligence community are especially vulnerable. Pols are perceived to be crooked anyway, so when they do something like this it's business as usual.
