So years ago they thought they could manage the message better with a name change; "call us progressives".
That would be all fine if "progressive" actually meant something, well, progressive.
According to Merriam-Webster "progressive" is
1 a : of, relating to, or characterized by progress b : making use of or interested in new ideas, findings, or opportunities
Now riddle me this Batman. How is it ""progressive" to want to turn our energy over to wind power which was popular around, say, 1700. Did it ever occur to a "progressive" that there's a reason we don't use that technology today?
Is that a new idea, finding or opportunity?
Or let's take transportation. "Progressives" in this state want to build a passenger rail line from Cincinnati to Columbus to Cleveland.
Forget for a moment that it will actually take 2 hours longer to take the rail over driving. But consider that there has never been a passenger rail line that worked in this state even before the idea of interstate highways originated.
In addition, even when urban populations were more dense inside of the cities, the rail lines didn't work. But the cities are much more spread out today. Let's say that Gordon has to get from Blue Ash to Parma or Elyria you can tack on a couple of extra hours to your commute if you plan to use Thomas the Tank Engine for your ride.
What is the technology of rail lines? Let's say it was rockin' cool in the 1800's.
If "progressives" keep getting more "progressive", we'll soon be commuting to Columbus via canal using waterwheels and oxen for energy.
