Meet Alex Ralles. Why is Alex in the news?

The annual Memorial Day parade here is considered one of the area's biggest and best, attracting about 1,000 people to the flag-lined streets each year.

But one Westwood man was apparently bent on tearing down the flagpoles and removing five of the flags from the route, police said Tuesday. Police said some of the poles were broken and some of the flags were damaged.

Alex Ralles, 20, of Cyclorama Drive was found with five of the flags and some broken poles - each about 8 feet long - in his car after being pulled over by police at 3:25 a.m. Monday, 7½ hours before the parade's start time.

About 200 flags are placed along the roughly half-mile route.

Police say a witness called police to say the young man was knocking down and stealing the flags.
