For the past two months, Keith Carpenter has been on paid medical leave for stress from his $50,000-a-year Metro job.
It's difficult to quibble over the stress, because the 51-year-old Springfield Township man is scheduled to go on trial July 19 on two counts of manslaughter that charge him with beating a man to death in a fight outside a bar.Metro chief public affairs officer Sallie Hilvers said Carpenter initiated the leave via a doctor's request following a March 28 incident in which he is accused of killing Alan Cunningham, 50, of Mount Healthy, in the rear parking lot at Vince's Other Place, 7701 Hamilton Ave.
"As a salaried employee, it's something he's entitled to, as any other worker would be," Hilvers said.
For Carpenter, the medical leave has provided at least a portion of his salary during a period in which he could not work anyway - because he was under house arrest.
Paying people under house arrest for manslaughter?
Now that's "Progressive"!
