The number of people in the U.S. who are in poverty is on track for a record increase on President Obama's watch, with the ranks of working-age poor approaching 1960s levels that led to the national war on poverty.

Census figures for 2009 — the recession-ravaged first year of the Democrat's presidency — are to be released in the coming week, and demographers expect grim findings.

It's unfortunate timing for Obama and his party just seven weeks before important elections when control of Congress is at stake. The anticipated poverty rate increase — from 13.2 percent to about 15 percent — would be another blow to Democrats struggling to persuade voters to keep them in power.

Why I'm starting to hate the NFL

I've been critical of baseball because the lack of revenue share from the largest markets makes the competitive balance a joke. However, many teams have figured out that they'll never compete with big market payrolls and now you're seeing teams groom great, young, hustling talent from withing their own organizations.

Yet, the NFL, who has lots of revenue sharing, is basically allowing shit ball organizations to prosper in the face of organizational failure.

Case in point, the Cincinnati Bengals and owner Mike Brown, ranked 31st of the worst owners in the NFL beating only a 80 year old senile, douche bag in Al Davis. Here's what Yahoo sports had to say about Mr. Brown......

Then again, Smith suffered a stress fracture in his foot two days after reporting. Perhaps the football gods have a sense of humor.

A couple of years ago, I decided to quit the NFL. I'll admit to watching a game if it's on TV every once in a while but I don't play fantasy, do pools, or anything if I think Mike Brown's getting his grubby as hands on the money.

My greatest hope in life is that there is an ebola outbreak at the next NFL owner's meeting and Mike Brown and the McCaskey family (ranked 30th by the way) are wiped out in a painful, tortuous bout of lethal diarrhea.

Then maybe I'll start watching again.

Talking down the economy

Wow how about this criticism about the Obama administration from the NY Times, in fact......

Normally, presidents are cheerleaders for the nation's economy.

Oops. My bad. This was from the NY Times in March, 2001 ripping then president Bush for "talking down the economy". Here's some more of the beat down......

Now comes George W. Bush, who is presenting what an analysis in The Financial Times lastweek called ''the novel spectacle'' of a president ''urging citizens to ignore good economic news and focus on the bad.'

All week, the president talked about the economy ''sputtering,'' and he wrapped up the week on Saturday by beginning his weekly radio address to the nation this way: ''Good morning. For several months, economic indicators have pointed toward a slowdown, and now many Americans are starting to feel its impact. The stock market is causing worries, high energy prices are straining family budgets and some workers and small-business people have been directly affected by layoffs and slowing retail sales.''

The fact of the matter is that the stock market did have a very bad week -- its worst in 11 1/2 years -- and many people are beginning to feel the pinch. But the economic news is not universally bad.

The Labor Department reported that 135,000 jobs were created in February, and the unemployment rate remained low at 4.2 percent. Retail sales remain relatively strong, particularly for big-ticket items like cars. Almost certainly, given the growth in jobs, the economy is not now in a recession.

But Mr. Bush and his advisers clearly decided a while back that the best shot they had for getting the public to support and Congress to approve a large tax cut was to argue that the measure was essential to bolster a sagging economy.

Early in his presidential campaign, in December 1999, when the economy was on a roll, Mr. Bush outlined his tax plan to the Chamber of Commerce in Des Moines and suggested that economists might be wrong in forecasting continued economic growth. Just in case, he declared, taxes should be lowered because ''if delayed until a downturn begins, tax cuts would come too late to prevent a recession.''

This is how I know the Obamunists are cutthroat socialists..... they're the only politicians to talk down their own economy.

Look, I actually don't believe that there's much any president can do, policy wise, to improve an economy. They can do plenty to harm it.

But the Obamunists seem hell bent to beat down the very people who you need to create jobs for the masses; not exactly out of the "How to make friends and influence people" playbook.

This is what happens when you hire a bunch of liberal art majors to run economies. They somehow seem to get degrees from colleges without one Econ 101 course. See if you were to ever take an econ 101 course you would understand that 90 percent of economics is psychology and sociology. If people perceive shortages, demand goes up. When people perceive you're out to screw them, they tend to do crazy shit like hoard cash.

One of Ronald Reagan's greatest strengths as president is that he created a perception that things were going to be great, and he supported everyone in that vision. Have you ever heard The Messiah speak of our nation as a great one? Have you ever heard The One speak about the great private enterprise engine that creates opportunities for millions around the world?

Maybe the dumb asses in the Obama administration would understood that. If they would have taken a couple of history courses to go along with that econ course.

If republicans are blocking your causes, it seems to me that they're doing a pretty crappy job of it.

As a follow up, I would then ask when are all these great things you've already passed actually going to show results or how many years to we need to give you before you actually start to take responsibility for this economy.

Next weekend the Gekko's will take our semi annual trip up to Yellow Springs, OH for a Clifton Gorge Hike and/or bike ride along the trail and a trip to Young's Dairy.

If you have never been to Yellow Springs (the former home of Antioch College), you need to make the trek.

Yellow Springs is a miniature Berkeley with all kinds of lefties peddling their hemp products and art works. Many of the shop owners like to proudly display their "goods not produced in sweat shops" signs.

So I like to drive the lovely Mrs. Gekko nuts when she's buys a $100 piece of pottery by asking the owner, "I make my money from sweatshops, are you sure you want to take it?"

Somehow, they always manage to eat their hypocrisy and always take the credit card which, by the way, they never seem to be overly concerned that the credit card company is ripping me off with usury type interest rates or that they're trapping me in a mountain of consumer debt I'll never get out of.

The point of all this is. Left to it's own designs, communal living can not subsist on it's own. Yellow Springs cannot and will not survive selling their overpriced crap without an economy that gives people like me the resources to buy their crap.

All these leftist who want to ban big, bad, businesses have no comprehension that nearly everything in their possession exists because of the capitalist drive to make money. Where's that IPod if the Government tells Steve Jobs he needs to cough up 90 percent of his income in taxes?

Big business is what drives all economies and really it's what subsidizes that clown selling the $120 hemp sandals.

We now know that federal employees across the nation owe fully $1 billion in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service.

As in, 1,000 times one million dollars. All this political jabber about giving middle-class ...

... Americans a tax cut. Thousands of feds have been giving themselves one all along -- unofficially. And these tax scofflaws include more than three dozen folks who work for the president with that newly decorated Oval Office.

The Post's T.W. Farnum did some research and found that out of the total sum, just 638 workers on Capitol Hill owe the IRS $9.3 million in back taxes. As in, overdue. The IRS gets stiffed by the legislative body that controls its budget. How Washington works.

Now, back taxes have been a problem for the Obama-Biden administration. You may recall early on that Tom Daschle was the president's top pick to run the Health and Human Services Department. But it turned out the former Democratic senator, who was un-elected from South Dakota in 2004, owed something like $120,000 to the IRS for things from his subsequent benefactor that he just forgot to pay taxes on. You know how that is. $120G's here or there. So he dropped out.

And then we learned this guy Timothy Geithner owed something like $42,000 in back taxes and penalties to the IRS, which is one of the agencies that he'd be in charge of as secretary of the Treasury. The fine fellow who's supposed to know about handling everyone else's money. In the end this was excused by Washington's bipartisan CYA culture as one of those inadvertent accidental oversights that somehow never seem to happen on the side of paying too much taxes.

And under Geithner's expert guidance the U.S. economy has been, well, wow! Just look at it.

Privacy laws prevent release of individual tax delinquents' names. But we do know that as of the end of 2009, 41 people inside Obama's very own White House owe the government they're allegedly running a total of $831,055 in back taxes. That would cover a lot of special chocolate desserts in the White House Mess.

Eddie Bernice Johnson, Democrat of Texas, not only steered Congressional Black Caucus scholarship money to two of her grandsons and two of her great-nephews, but asked that the checks be sent directly to her relatives instead of to the schools.

Johnson represents a supremely Democratic district — D+23 in the Cook Partisan Voting Index — and thus is unlikely to see severe repercussions at the ballot box for this scandal.

But Georgia Democrat Sanford Bishop might. “Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) awarded three scholarships from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to his stepdaughter and wife’s niece between 2003 and 2005, according to records from the non-profit group.” The congressman’s defense is that because the no-relatives rule was not officially put in place until 2008, he technically broke no rules.

Another non problem solved by government

Texting or e-mailing while driving in Cincinnati soon will mean a $100 fine.

Six Cincinnati City Council members - a majority - voted Wednesday to ban "sending, reading or writing a text message or accessing the internet while driving."

The ban would go into effect 30 days after the full council approves it, which likely will be on Thursday.

Here's a memo to your average councilman/woman, we already have a law covering this and it's called reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

Look, I text once a week; usually to remind Midas that Coldplay sucks. So this law really doesn't impact me at all. None the less, here are some things I've witnessed, done or have friends that do that are at least as distracting as texting.

The guys at Redstate have a letter signed off on by the who's who of congressional democrats to ask then President Bush (circa 2004) indicating that tightening home mortgage standards would pose a risk to affordable housing.

A man is accused of operating a methamphetamine lab and growing marijuana near an elementary school.

Paul Bryant, 44, was booked into the Hamilton County jail about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on multiple drug-related charges. He is scheduled to appear Thursday before a municipal court judge.

He was taken into custody shortly after Cincinnati police went to his home in the 3100 block of River Road Wednesday. Officers summoned a Hazmat team and Cincinnati firefighters as a suspected meth lab was dismantled.

A senior aide for Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) was arrested Tuesday for attempting to bring marijuana into the Hart Senate Office Building, according to U.S. Capitol Police reports.

Marcus Stanley, who served as a senior economic adviser and at one time worked on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee — chaired by Boxer — was stopped by a police officer Tuesday morning when he allegedly tried to “remove and conceal” a leafy green substance from his pocket during a security screening at the Constitution Avenue door of the Hart building around noon, according to a Capitol Police report.

I continue to be amazed at the number of fully functional professional who insist on smoking the tree. Seriously, is the buzz so awesome that your willing to give up a job for it?

I smoke my fair share of weed as a kid and I guess I just got tired of talking about Pink Floyd while the buzz was good it just seemed more like a been there done that kind of thing. A three beer buzz seems to be a more logical, and legal way to go.

Health insurers say they plan to raise premiums for some Americans as a direct result of the health overhaul in coming weeks, complicating Democrats' efforts to trumpet their signature achievement before the midterm elections.

Aetna Inc., some BlueCross BlueShield plans and other smaller carriers have asked for premium increases of between 1% and 9% to pay for extra benefits required under the law, according to filings with state regulators.

These and other insurers say Congress's landmark refashioning of U.S. health coverage, which passed in March after a brutal fight, is causing them to pass on more costs to consumers than Democrats predicted.

The rate increases largely apply to policies for individuals and small businesses and don't include people covered by a big employer or Medicare.

In many respects, the way the Obamunists economic policies are more nefarious than socialism. See, in socialist economies, the government runs the business and is accountable to it's customers. If the service sucks they hold the government is responsible.

The way the obamunist system work, the state ties the hands of profit making businesses with endless regulation and taxes then makes them the straw man when the consumer starts to bitch.

Then they get to regulate them even more until they ultimately take the whole sector over.

A protest over the fatal police shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant turned violent when some demonstrators threw bottles at officers, set trash cans on fire and refused to disperse.

Television news footage showed people tossing the bottles and plastic crates at officers in riot gear late Monday near MacArthur Park, a neighborhood with a large Central American population west of downtown.

Police declared the protest an unlawful assembly around 10 p.m. and ordered the dozens of protesters to disperse. The majority of the crowd cleared out, but a small number lingered and caused trouble, police spokesman Gregory Baek said.

Police made a couple of arrests, Baek said. He said police won't have a final tally until they complete the booking process for the suspects.

The protest began in the afternoon with demonstrators marching back and forth between a bustling shopping area where the shooting occurred and the Rampart police station three blocks away.

Police said three bicycle officers were patrolling the area Sunday when someone flagged them down and said a man was threatening passers-by with a knife.

When officers confronted the man, they ordered him to drop the knife but he refused, Lt. Andrew Neiman said.

"Instead, he came after the officers with a knife raised in the air, leading one of the officers to fire at the suspect," Neiman said.

Long Island Rep. Carolyn McCarthy got thousands of dollars in campaign checks from a lobbyist and his son who've since been charged with funneling illegal cash to politicians.

At the same time the money was pouring in, McCarthy sponsored millions of taxpayer dollars in congressional "earmarks" for some of the lobbyist's clients, records show.

Since 2007, the Long Island Democrat has steered $4.3 million to two clients of the now-defunct PMA Group, a lobbying firm that employed the recently indicted Paul Magliocchetti and his son, Mark.

The Magliocchettis were charged Aug. 4 for what federal prosecutors in Alexandria, Va., say were illegal campaign contributions made from at least 2003 through 2008.

Paul Magliocchetti has pleaded not guilty. Mark Magliochetti has pleaded guilty to one count of making illegal donations. He admitted that he routinely acted as a conduit for donations made by others to Congress members - an illegal tactic aimed at hiding the true source of the money.

A few notes.

1) I drank about 10 Moosehead beers. I think I understand how it got it's name. I keep thinking the pain in my cranium are antlers trying to sprout.

2) There's one big difference between a party in your forties versus one in your twenties. When you have a party in your forties, you somehow end up with more beer than you started with.

3) My hamstrings feel like a couple of 2x4's. Who would have thought canoeing would be so strenuous?

At least, the Reds and Bearcats are keeping the hangover alive.

But this time it's going to work....

Hey, I know the 800 billion the feds spent on the stimulus was supposed get people back to work by funding all those "shovel ready" jobs.

But I guess they were off by 50 billion........

Vowing to find new ways to stimulate the sputtering economy, President Barack Obama will call for long-term investments in the nation's roads, railways and runways that would cost at least $50 billion.

The infrastructure investments are one part of a package of targeted proposals the White House is expected to announce in hopes of jump-starting the economy ahead of the November election. Obama will outline the infrastructure proposal Monday at a Labor Day event in Milwaukee.

While the proposal calls for investments over six years, the White House said spending would be front-loaded with an initial $50 billion to help create jobs in the near future.

The goals of the infrastructure plan include: rebuilding 150,000 miles of roads; constructing and maintaining 4,000 miles of railways, enough to go coast-to-coast; and rehabilitating or reconstructing 150 miles of airport runways, while also installing a new air navigation system designed to reduce travel times and delays.

Just one question for Obama and Co. Where the hell was the funding for all this shit 2 years ago?

If you were to listen to CBS Evening news, you would probably believe that you will find racial intolerance at your local tea party.

Duong Nghe Ly can't wait to begin his senior year at South Philadelphia High School. A day of violence there last year changed his life, and he wants to learn if his school has been transformed as well.

Last Dec. 3, after years of attacks on Asian immigrant students, something finally snapped.

Fueled by rumors, a group of students roamed the halls searching for Asian victims until one was attacked in a classroom. Later, about 70 students stormed the cafeteria, where several Asians were beaten. About 35 students pushed past a police officer onto the so-called "Asian floor," but were turned back. After school, Asians being escorted home were attacked anyway by a mob of youths.

Almost all the attackers were black - but few observers believe the violence was due to racial hatred. Instead, they cite isolation of different groups within the school, certain students' warped "gangster" values, and for some, simmering resentments over perceived benefits for Asian students.

About 30 Asians were injured that day; seven went to hospitals. Past attacks had been reported to administrators and police, but students say nothing seemed to change.

First, can you believe the line "Almost all the attackers were black - but few observers believe the violence was due to racial hatred."

You have one group identified by racial context targeting another but it's not due to racial hatred? Just how stupid does the writer believe we are.

As health care costs continue their relentless climb, companies are increasingly passing on higher premium costs to workers.

The shift is occurring, policy analysts and others say, as employers feel more pressure from the weak economy and the threat of even more expensive coverage under the new health care law.

In contrast to past practices of absorbing higher prices, some companies chose this year to keep their costs the same by passing the entire increase in premiums for family coverage onto their workers, according to a new survey released on Thursday by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit research group.

Workers’ share of the cost of a family policy jumped an average of 14 percent, an increase of about $500 a year. The cost of a policy rose just 3 percent, to an average of $13,770.

During my life as a Christian, I have learned that God gave humans dominion over planet Earth, Eden, if you will.

As part of our dominion, we are responsible for it's use and misuse and when judgment day comes, we all be judged with how we used/misused our gifts.

Seems fair enough to me.

But what I don't get is the mindset of your average global warming kook. For instance.....

1) Many of these people tend to be humanists, meaning they don't have a belief in an after life. In fact, many believe our souls are no different than your average horse, cheetah, snake or flea.

If that's the case, then why do you care so much about saving the planet? I mean, who the hell are we actually saving it for? An unborn and/or yet to be conceived kangaroo? Seems kind of odd given that most environmentalist don't seem to have a problem whacking an unborn human from a womb. Shouldn't that person get a chance to experience this wonderful world? Or at least as much as a future extinct animal or plant?

2) Since so many of these folks believe that humans are no different than a dog, elk or hippo, what's the big deal about their procreation? And who the hell are you to look down on Jon and Kate's eight when you won't say word one to the neighborhood rat who's had seventy five babies? And let's face, it most of us were probably a product of some family with 6 plus kids somewhere along the family tree.

Finally, where exactly is the environmentalist outcry over the crazy carbon abuses from those like Al Gore, Sheryl Crow et al. Al Gore maintains over 300,000 square feet of housing for his family and is on a jet heading to some conference nearly every day. With today's technology, he could very easily do all these presentations via teleconference. Ever heard of Skype?

Sheryl Crow has no problem loading up a tour bus full of roadies, semi's full of equipment, flying to all these venues, for what? To listen to music we could have on a DVD. To say it's about the live experience; that's bull. When The Gekko's saw Eric Clapton this summer, we were so far away from the stage, we ended up watching on a TV anyway.

I'll start buying in to the eco lib religious indoctrination as soon as they start walking the talk. Going into a Discovery condemning someone else for doing what you're not willing to do on your own doesn't qualify.

In the punditry business, it's considered bad form to question the essential wisdom of the American people. But at this point, it's impossible to ignore the obvious: The American people are acting like a bunch of spoiled brats.

This is not, I repeat not, a partisan argument. My own political leanings are well-known, but the refusal of Americans to look seriously at the nation's situation -- and its prospects -- is an equal-opportunity scourge. Republicans got the back of the electorate's hand in 2006 and 2008; Democrats will feel the sting this November. By 2012, it will probably be the GOP's turn to get slapped around again.

The nation demands the impossible: quick, painless solutions to long-term, structural problems. While they're running for office, politicians of both parties encourage this kind of magical thinking. When they get into office, they're forced to try to explain that things aren't quite so simple -- that restructuring our economy, renewing the nation's increasingly rickety infrastructure, reforming an unsustainable system of entitlements, redefining America's position in the world and all the other massive challenges that face the country are going to require years of effort. But the American people don't want to hear any of this. They want somebody to make it all better. Now.

This is the biggest pile of caca I've ever read by someone who reports to be educated in some manner.

First, how about this. How about a government that just quits making things worse? In the world of Eugene Robinson, we should be grateful for that 10% unemployment that we probably wouldn't have if the government hadn't gotten involved. See Germany.

Second, no one is asking for painless. Chris Christie is delivering the necessary and the electorate seems to be responding positively because they know the tough choices have to be made and he's laying it out for the public.

Third, there's a football coach in this town who repeats the mantra "do your job!". Unfortunately, in this country, we have a federal government, who's principal responsibility is to secure our borders for our national defense, who is not only refusing to do it's job, it's suing any state who decides to do it for them.

All the while bailing out every damn special interest group with hands.

Fourth, only in political punditry are spending cuts considered "draconian". But let me ask you a question. Do you think the people in New Jersey are experiencing a different government as a result of Christie "slashing" the budget?

The problem with our government is not the lack of funds. It's a total lack of responsibility & accountability of our elected officials to spend money as if it were coming out of their own wallets.

In other words.

DO YOUR FREAKIN' JOB OR WE'LL FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT.

If you ever wanted to understand how it is that unemployment in this country is nearly 10% and 13% in the golden state, you need look no further than how liberals treat tax paying and job creating businesses.........

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Tuesday rebuked Valero Energy Corp. and Tesoro Corp., which operate refineries in Wilmington, for bankrolling a measure that would effectively scuttle the state's efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

"Go home, Texas oil companies," Villaraigosa urged at a news conference aimed at encouraging voters to oppose Proposition 23, a November ballot initiative to suspend California's 2006 climate change law until the state's unemployment rate drops. "We won't compromise our environmental and health standards so you can make more money," he said.

The sharp tone was an early indication of the battle expected over the measure, which proponents say would save jobs and lower energy costs but that opponents say will choke California's pioneering effort to reduce planet-warming pollutants and attract alternative-energy jobs.

A pistol-packing grandmother in Decatur hopes intruders will think twice before messing with her again.

Police say 69-year-old Ethel Jones shot 18-year-old Michael O'Neal Bynum in the abdomen when she said she found him inside her bedroom. Bynum lived less than 200 yards from Jones, but she said she didn't know him.

"I hope this will make people have second thoughts before they break into a home in our neighborhood and stop some of the crime we've had around here," she told The Decatur Daily.

Jones said she sleeps with her gun under a pillow next to her. She said she was going to the bathroom shortly before 3 a.m. Monday when she thought she heard someone at her back door and then her front door. She grabbed her gun as a precaution and came out of the bathroom to find someone in her bedroom with a pen light.

"I shot three times, and he ran away bleeding," she said.

Now in 2008 did Ethel pull the lever for Four More years of Bush or Hope and Change?

During all the years I was active in various sports at every level, I was never on a team that "hazed" anyone. About the only thing new members had to do was load equipment.

None the less, here's a list of the most brutal college hazing rituals.

It reminded me of my high school track coach who went to Bowling Green during the 1960's.

As he related the story to us. The actives lined up all the pledges and measured their junk.

The guy who had the biggest, had to wear this humongous, sombrero sized, fire hat around campus for the next week.

The guy with the smallest had to wear one of really dinky one (the size of the baseball helmet sundae's).

In his words, "it was the first time in my life I prayed to be average"!

I'm old enough to remember when you could have 5 - 10 kids in a car or back of a pick up truck. None of them belted in or in car seats.

But after reading this I have to wonder if that wasn't a lot safer than what we're doing with kids today.........

Leawood, KS - August 27, 2010 - Children are dying in hot cars at alarming rates. At least thirty-nine (39) children have died so far this year with more summer weather still to come. Eleven (11) of those children perished since the beginning of August. Approximately 50% of the 2010 incidents involved children getting into an unlocked vehicle on their own and the other half were unknowingly ‘forgotten’ by an adult caregiver who became distracted when they left the vehicle. It takes only minutes for a child to be at risk of death and serious, permanent injury in a hot car.

“This heartbreaking news can only be met with the need to increase awareness about these predictable but very preventable tragedies,” said Janette Fennell, founder and president of KidsAndCars.org. “We are reaching out to the media to request their assistance to add warning messages during their broadcasts, include safety tips in print media and on their web sites.” A map that provides information about the number of vehicular heat stroke fatalities for each state can be found at: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/KidsAndCarsorg/128148590541866?ref=ts

The overall goal of the outreach campaign is to ensure no more children die in 2010 because they were locked inside a hot vehicle. “It is vital to engage the power of the media to get this life-saving information into the hands of families quickly and with the same high profile frequency used during product recalls or anytime eminent danger befalls America’s children” Fennell added. “We want parents and caregivers to take immediate precautions so that a similar tragedy does not happen to them or anyone in their family.”

Here's an idea. Let's have the kids in the front seat where people can actually see them while they're driving.

Oh we can't do that because of the damn air bags in the cars that make them "safer".

Recovery Summer - Mission accomplished

U.S. auto sales in August probably were the slowest for the month in 28 years as model-year closeout deals failed to entice consumers concerned the economy is worsening and they may lose their jobs.

Industrywide deliveries, to be released tomorrow, may have reached an annualized rate of 11.6 million vehicles this month, the average of eight analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That would be the slowest August since 1982, according to researcher Ward’s AutoInfoBank. The rate would be 18 percent below last year’s 14.2 million pace, when the U.S. government’s “cash for clunkers” incentive program boosted sales.

“Home sales are way down, the stock market is way down, the unemployment report is very disappointing and consumer confidence is sputtering,” Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends at TrueCar.com, said in an interview. “People just don’t want to make big-ticket purchases because they’re uncertain about their jobs and the value of their homes.”

While automakers increased discounts by 1 percent from July to an average of $2,864 per vehicle, sales to individuals probably fell 7 percent from last month, according to Santa Monica, California-based TrueCar.

Before you go believing that Muslims in New York are the only religious group being denied an opportunity to express their religious freedoms by building a structure, you need to read this.

Here in Porkopolis, there has been an on going feud with a Methodist church and the neighbors in Hyde Park, a nice area within the city.

Apparently, these people hate Christians. How else do you explain the continued fighting of the neighbors with an already existing church who simply wants to build addition and parking to their facility?

It's been awhile since we've provided an update on our neighborhood situation regarding Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church (HPCUMC). This has been because we have, since September, been in formal mediation with HPCUMC in an attempt to satisfactorily resolve our neighborhood dispute in a way that provided adequate protection to our neighborhood, as promised by HPCUMC in their 2001 letter.

As a bit of background, we agreed with HPCUMC last September to formally initiate a mediation process. We jointly engaged a highly respected mediator with substantial experience in issues like ours. HPCUMC designated one of their members, along with their legal counsel, to be members of their mediation team; Keith Harrison and Tim Burke represented PHP. The mediation team met on three separate occasions during the course of the Fall, with each session lasting 2-4 hours. In addition, the outside mediator met with a small group of neighbors on two different occasions to understand neighborhood concerns and to explore different possible scenarios.

Just who do these people believe they are? Denying the rights of a religious groups to justify their carnal NIMBY impulses.

Of course, everyone knows that the Methodists have backed terrorists for years and the building of this facility is just an attempt to rub the noses of the nearby Presbyterians and Catholics in it. In addition, Methodists were probably responsible for bringing down 100 story building in Hyde Park Square.

Actually, I've been meaning to get down there to take some photographs. As soon as I do, you'll be able to see how those Methodists have run down the Hyde Park Hood.

None the less, it's nice to see that Americans are not out just hating on those pesky Methodists.

Cash for Clunkers a post mortem

One of the things that makes the environment greener is auto trade ins.

See, I want a new car so I trade in my older but perfectly functional automobile. The lower income guy who can't afford a new car then buys my car and gets rid of his oil burning jalopy which barely runs.

Call it recycling.

But in the world of cash for clunkers, lower income guy can't buy my car because he can't afford it.

Why?

Because in the world of cash for clunkers cars like mine got destroyed causing the market for those cars to sky rocket so that Joe Sixpack can no longer afford that car.......

If buying a used car is among your cost-cutting measures...be prepared to pay up to 30-percent more than you did last year.

It is a simple case of supply and demand.

Trouble is...there are fewer used cars.

The cash-for-clunkers program took a bunch off the market.

Plus, Edmunds Senior Editor Bill Visnick says 5-million fewer new cars were sold last year...which pares down the used car supply even more.

Forrest Frankenstein, 39, of Hamilton appeared in court with fresh metal sutures in his head Monday after he repeatedly smashed the top of his skull into a partition of a police vehicle, police records say.

This act of self-destruction came after he allegedly kicked a window from its frame in another police cruiser.

Police reports say Frankenstein approached Hamilton County Sheriff's Office deputies at the Toby Keith concert and threatened to kill them multiple times at 11:30 Friday evening.

Frankenstein's arrest on two counts of menacing, disorderly conduct and vandalism was his first serious offense in Hamilton County.

"Mr. Frankenstein you went crazy. What happened?" Judge Bernie Bouchard asked Monday before setting bond at $20,000 for each of the four charges.

Frankenstein: "I started drinking."

Growing up, I was never much of a Bob Dylan fan. But once The Lovely Mrs. Gekko turned me on to the all the Dylan influences, I started listening to his music in a different light and now I'm a huge fan.

The reason: The school chose one book to give to all incoming freshman to read to give a sense of a "common experience," and the book is "How Does It Feel To Be A Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America," written by "a radical pro-Palestinian professor" who happens to teach at Brooklyn College.

[The book contains] interviews with seven Arab-Americans in their 20s about their experiences and difficulties in the US. There’s appreciation of freedoms in the US, and deep resentment at feeling or being discriminated against post-9/11....

The title of the book is drawn from communist WEB DuBois’ same question in 1903 in his treatise The Souls of Black Folk. The current book consciously draws a parallel, ridiculous on its face, between the horrible and pervasive discrimination and injustices that Blacks were subjected to a century ago and Arab-Americans today.

The author asserts “The core issue [of Middle East turbulence] remains the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination,” that the post-1967 history of the entire area is essentially that of “imperialism American-style,” and that the US government “limits the speech of Arab Americans in order to cement United States policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” Again, preposterous....

Online I found two professors who protested to the college president. One, retired from Brooklyn College, said: "This is wholly inappropriate. It smacks of indoctrination. It will intimidate incoming students who have a different point of view (or have formed no point of view), sending the message that only one side will be approved on this College campus. It can certainly intimidate untenured faculty as well."

I can't imagine wanting freshman to get the message that they are about to be indoctrinated. On the up side, for freshman: If the school makes it clear right in the first week, you may still be in a position to quit and get your tuition back. If they're subtle about it — and it's so easy to be subtle about it — you're drawn into it. Clear efforts at indoctrination are repugnant. One recoils. It's like evil-tasting poison. The evil taste is a great benefit. You reflexively spit it out.

Life in "Progress" State - Illinois edition

The state's miserable bond rating has driven up borrowing costs for state government by more than $500 million since last year, a government watchdog group says.

The nonpartisan, Chicago-based Civic Federation analyzed the near-record borrowing that the state has undertaken since last September and looked at similar borrowing during the same period in other states that have higher bond ratings than Illinois.

The result was a staggering $551.3 million extra that state taxpayers are having to devote to support the state's thirst for debt because of a series of rating downgrades, the group says in a report being released today.

"This is an actual quantification of what the cost of the state's fiscal irresponsibility has been because of the Illinois General Assembly and governor's failure to stabilize state finances and to allow our credit rating to drop so low we are now the lowest credit-rated state in the country, with California," said Laurence Msall, the Civic Federation's president.

Looks like Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Tex., is going to be in some hot water over this:

Longtime Dallas congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to four relatives and a top aide’s two children since 2005, using foundation funds set aside for black lawmakers’ causes.

The recipients were ineligible under anti-nepotism rules of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which provided the money. And all of the awards violated a foundation requirement that scholarship winners live or study in a caucus member’s district.

Johnson, a Democrat, denied any favoritism when asked about the scholarships last week. Two days later, she acknowledged in a statement released by her office that she had violated the rules but said she had done so “unknowingly” and would work with the foundation to “rectify the financial situation.”

Oikophobia

What is it about liberals and their fear of common sense?

The Ground Zero mosque is an affront to the sensibilities of ordinary Americans. "The center's association with 9/11 is intentional and its location is no geographic coincidence," as the Associated Press has reported. That Americans would find this offensive is a matter of simple common sense. The liberal elites cannot comprehend common sense, and, incredibly, they think that's a virtue. After all, common sense is so common.

The British philosopher Roger Scruton has coined a term to describe this attitude: oikophobia. Xenophobia is fear of the alien; oikophobia is fear of the familiar: "the disposition, in any conflict, to side with 'them' against 'us', and the felt need to denigrate the customs, culture and institutions that are identifiably 'ours.' " What a perfect description of the pro-mosque left.

Scruton was writing in 2004, and his focus was on Britain and Europe, not America. But his warning about the danger of oikophobes--whom he amusingly dubs "oiks"--is very pertinent on this side of the Atlantic today, and it illuminates how what are sometimes dismissed as mere matters of "culture" tie in with economic and social policy:

The oik repudiates national loyalties and defines his goals and ideals against the nation, promoting transnational institutions over national governments, accepting and endorsing laws that are imposed on us from on high by the EU or the UN, though without troubling to consider Terence's question, and defining his political vision in terms of universal values that have been purified of all reference to the particular attachments of a real historical community.

The oik is, in his own eyes, a defender of enlightened universalism against local chauvinism. And it is the rise of the oik that has led to the growing crisis of legitimacy in the nation states of Europe. For we are seeing a massive expansion of the legislative burden on the people of Europe, and a relentless assault on the only loyalties that would enable them voluntarily to bear it. The explosive effect of this has already been felt in Holland and France. It will be felt soon everywhere, and the result may not be what the oiks expect.

Why is Colondra in the news?

An Elmwood Place police officer who stopped a car because it had illegally tinted windows received a bit of a shock when he looked inside.

Officer Ross Gilbert said the driver, Colondra Hamilton, a 36-year-old Downtown resident, was sitting with her pants unzipped and a sex toy in her lap.

He said Hamilton told him she was using the toy while watching a sex video on a laptop computer that a passenger in the front seat held up so she could see it.

Gilbert charged her with "driving with inappropriate alertness" and having illegal tinted windows, according to the traffic ticket.

My God! at least she wasn't texting!

I think guessing her vote might be a tough one. Let's face it. She can multitask which would seem to make her a natural republican. But the porn while driving might make her a natural democratic constituent.

So on November, 2008 did Colondra vote for The One or The Maverick?
