Cincinnati police aren’t sure why a high school graduate with a steady job was shot and killed Wednesday night while seated in his parked car outside of the apartment complex where he lives.

Mark Mason Jr., 19, was sitting in his vehicle at 3545 Ibsen Ave., between Madison Road and Ridge Avenue, just after 11 p.m. when he was gunned down. Police said he was shot in the head.

A friend, 18, was uninjured as he ducked for cover in the passenger seat. He told police he didn’t see who was shooting.

I get enraged when punks shoot law abiding, taxpaying citizens. But that's life and death in "Progress" City. What I find hilarious is that if this kid were to live in lily white "Redville" where we all cling to our God and guns, he'd be alive today.

None the less, if you are a newspaper extolling the questions of why a seemingly good kid gets shot..............

Life in "Progress" State - Michigan edition

Michigan could save at least $4 million a year because of changes to the Michigan Bridge Card, a taxpayer-funded food assistance program that some legislators, including State Rep. Joe Haveman (R-Holland), claim college students have been abusing.

“College kids are not the client that was intended for Bridge Cards,” Haveman said. “For a traditional college student coming out of a middle class family, their parents are their support system.”

The current Bridge Card application policy, which will be altered in April, required applicants to provide information about their earned and unearned income and household expenses to the Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS). Depending on those factors, DHS can allot a monthly food stipend of up to $200.

About 1.9 million Michigan residents have Bridge Cards, DHS reported. Most beneficiaries are low-income families and the unemployed. But due in part to their jobless status, between 18,000 and 20,000 college students qualified in 2010, according to DHS spokesperson Christina Fecher.

So why and how -- in this age of supposedly rigid litmus tests -- has a man who is firmly in the middle right become a right wing hero? Easy. It's the attitude, stupid. If you look closely, what you have to conclude is that conservatives are not so much aching for an arch-conservative as they are someone who is not afraid to boldly proclaim the conservatism that he/she does believe in -- and not afraid to focus on the most immediate problems.

As even far lefty Eleanor Clift had to admit in the Daily Beast, Christie is playing well due to his "heft and swagger, both physical and intellectual."

Give us a 70% guy who is true to himself and who is going to stand his ground for that 70 over a 90% guy who will sell out half of that to stay friends with the media and the lobbyists and the precious "independents."

As we watch all the protests going on in Madison, Columbus and the likes, here's the one thing I hope the republicans are catching on to "Why cozy up to groups who will never support you no matter what you do"?

These union thugs are never going to support republicans plain and simple. Any yet, historically the GOP has always seemed wishy washy in backing the items conservatives know to be true. It has been maddening.

It appears that Chris Christie has pushed the republican party into a place where they can no longer retreat into wussyhood.

Tuesday’s Dallas County Commissioner’s Court meeting erupted into an argument between Commissioner John Wiley Price and a citizen, ending with Price repeatedly telling several citizens to “go to hell.”

The exchange started during the public speaking portion of the meeting, which happens after the commissioners have gone through their weekly agenda.

Six citizens addressed the court. All of them talked about the recent controversial departure of county Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet. Sherbet, who was the Elections Administrator for 24 years, said he felt Price and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins forced him out.

The last public speaker at Tuesday’s meeting, Jeff Turner, began by stating that he would refer to “a certain member of the court” — Price — as “the Chief Mulllah of Dallas County.”

Court rules state that public speakers may not address individual commissioners by name.

As Turner spoke, he continued to call Price “Chief Mulllah.” Price interrupted Turner several times, yelling at him, “don’t call me Chief Mulllah” and “call me by my name.”

The New Oxford American Dictionary defines “mullah” as “a Muslim learned in Islamic theology and sacred law.”

Turner continued speaking, ignoring Price’s ongoing interruptions.

At that point, Jenkins adjourned the meeting.

As Price stood to leave, he looked at Turner and the five other citizens who addressed the court. Price said to them, “All of you are white. Go to hell!”

Why people don't trust their government

A while back I posted on the government's push to get children immunized in the face of now discredited science indicating a link between autism and immunizations.

If you ever wondered why it is that people so distrust their public officials on public health issues you need look no further than what public officials say to gin up support for their causes.

After Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson testified on Feb. 2 that regulating drinking water might help prevent children from getting autism, CNSNews.com asked Jackson by e-mail whether she could provide “any data, studies, documents, reports or other sources” to confirm her claim. Her office subsequently stated there were “emerging studies” but provided no evidence.

In an e-mail statement to CNSNews.com on Feb. 11, Jackson said there were “emerging studies” that show a possible link between autism and environmental factors. But repeated requests by e-mail and by telephone to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asking them to produce those studies or other documentation to support her claim were not answered.

The Feb. 11 statement said, “We do not yet know enough about autism to identify any specific environmental contaminants that are responsible. As EPA Administrator, it is my job to make sure that the public's health is protected from environmental toxins in the air we breathe, the water we drink and our land. Science is an always evolving field, and will always guide EPA's actions.”

“Developmental disorders, including autism, hit close to home for many Americans,” the statement said. “We have seen over the decade, the reported prevalence of such developmental disorders rise.”

All you need to do is ask yourself one question. Is water cleaner today than in the past? If your answer is yes than how does more autism cases occur when we have cleaner water?

In other words, she has no more proof than the jackass who fabricated the original autism link. If this derelict were in the private sector she'd be fired for her incompetence.

The City of Cincinnati released it's route for the upcoming light rail line they'll be wasting taxpayer dollars on.

Whenever I need traffic for the old blog there's a few things I can post on that will generate traffic no matter what. And apparently, there's a ton of people who like to google "cincinnati light rail" so they troll and espouse the benefits of rail traffic within the city of Cincinnati.

Given that, I know there will be light rail proponents checking out this blog.

So I propose a challenge to all of you Thomas the Tank Engine obsessed proponents.

Will you be willing to bet your life savings against mine that this rail system will do three things?

1) Come in below budget
2) Exceed rider projections
3) Not need more taxpayer support than originally projected

I'm more than willing to bet everything I have (and more if I had it) that none of these things will come to fruition.

If you are a proponent of the rail why won't you take me up on this? Because in reality isn't that the gist of this whole project..... A bunch of people with no skin in the game using someone else's money on a monumental capital works gamble?

If they lose, who cares? Right? These people will scurry under the baseboards like cock roaches when the lights go on.

And when they lose who will be picking up the tab? The very people bitching about how this was a loser from day 1.

Fortunately, people like me who have seen the lunacy of large municipal government for years, won't be picking up the tab. They've already moved from this farce a long time ago. Which is why our cities are populated with a bunch of free loaders instead of hard working, taxpaying, citizens.

And that's why a tony rail system won't do anything to slow down the Detroitization of our once great and proud cities.

A Pontiac woman’s alleged theft attempt was foiled this week when her motorized cart became stuck at a Rochester Hills Meijer.

Jerrie Perkins, 30, is charged with unarmed robbery, resisting and obstructing a police officer and second-degree retail fraud.

Her bond was set at $15,000 by 52-3 District Magistrate Nick Camargo during arraignment Thursday.

Investigators said Perkins was attempting to leave the Rochester Road Meijer with more than $600 worth of stolen electronic merchandise when her cart got stuck and she was unable to drive out the door.

So in the last presidential election, did Jerrie vote for The Messiah or Four More Years of Bush?

Life in "Progress" School System - DC edition

The teacher played religious gospel songs for his students and had been warned about playing DVDs during class. Students reported that he told them to go to "H-E-L-L," all spelled out.

"[He] said he didn't see anything wrong with it because the word hell is in the Bible," wrote a D.C. Public Schools principal in his recommendation that the teacher be fired in 2008.

D.C. Public Schools dismissed that teacher, as well as 74 others deemed ineffective by their principals, as of Aug. 1, 2008.

But an independent arbitrator ruled last week that then-Chancellor Michelle Rhee had improperly fired those 75 teachers because she never told them why they were being dismissed -- "The glaring and fatal flaw," arbitrator Charles Feigenbaum wrote in his verdict favoring the Washington Teachers' Union, which has been fighting DCPS on the firings for more than two years.

In my little "Redville" enclave in Warren County, the talk of the area has been the murder trial of Ryan Widmer.

If you're not familiar with the case, Widmer is accused of drowning his wife of less than a year in a bathtub. His case has been featured on Dateline and is right up there with the Sam Shepherd case from the fifties for it's local notoriety.

His first trial was ruled a mistrial after juror misconduct. The second was ruled a mistrial after a hung jury and now we are on the third.

Here's what I find fascinating. Guys if you're looking to hook up with the ladies you don't need the charisma of a rock band front man, the wealth of Bill Gates, or the looks of Brad Pitt. All you need is a notorious trial where you are accused of MURDERING YOUR WIFE and the ladies will come flocking to you.

Seriously, in this third trial, one of the prosecution witnesses is a woman from Iowa who befriended Widmer after seeing his profile on Dateline and testified that he admitted to killing Sarah.

Not to be outdone, the defense brought a witness from Seattle who befriended Widmer after flying from Seattle to Cincinnati so she could meet him at a bowling fundraiser. She testified that she talked to Widmer minutes before the Iowa babe and that he wasn't drunk when she spoke to him.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Whether you believe in his guilt or not, the guy is still accused of MURDERING HIS WIFE!

Does that not mean anything to women? Geez, the Seattle chick was even married.

Meet Aimee Brasher. Why is she in the news?

Police say a woman was pulled over Thursday night for suspicion of driving on a suspended license, but what officers found was much more disturbing.

Investigators say Aimee Brasher had been smoking marijuana in her car while her 1-year-old was in the car with her. Brasher is also seven months pregnant.

Brasher was arrested and charged with drug possession and child endangerment. At an arraignment hearing on Friday morning, bond was set at $10,000.

So did this mom of the year vote for Obama or McCain in the past election?

What's income got to do with it?

Apparently, the Earned Income Credit is rife with fraud........

The GAO has listed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Program as having the second highest dollar amount of improper payments of all Federal programs. The IRS has made little improvement in reducing EITC improper payments since 2002 when it was first required to report estimates of these payments to Congress. The IRS continues to report that 23% - 28% of EITC payments are issued improperly each year. In Fiscal Year 2009, this equated to $11 billion to $13 billion in EITC improper payments.

Who would have thunk it? Free money for nothing and apparently people try to abuse that system? That's a big ole Obama WTF!

The other day, I had a young guy come in to question his tax return wondering why he didn't get anything for his education credit. I explained that because he was in grad school his education credits wouldn't exceed the amount of tax he actually owed. In other words; not refundable.

His response "geez, I guess the government thinks it would be better if I got a job!".

My first instinct was to drag this guy out of my office, kick his ass and say to him "who do you think is subsidizing that fucking grad school tuition you pay. It's working assholes like me who actually pay taxes."

My second instinct is to shrug my shoulders because why shouldn't this guy think he should get a refund for something he never paid into. After all, the single mom who lives next to him never went to college, got knocked up with a couple of bastards and does drugs.

She'll probably walk away with a $5,000 refund she never paid in just for being a bum.

Just for giggles, I decided to review the income and tax liabilities for the 100 tax returns we've kicked out this year.

Now keep in mind that our system is called an "income" tax. Allegedly, that means a tax on your income.

But if it's an income tax, how can one person make $66,000 and have to pay $10,388.00 into federal income tax and her neighbor makes $74,000 and pays only $383.00? A $10,000 difference.

Now each taxpayer has completely different fact sets. One may have received energy credits, they're filing a joint return for family with children in college, or own an expensive home with lots of mortgage interest.

So? What the hell does any of that have to do with income? The premise is that if you make more, you can afford more. I can tell you from knowing both of the clients above, the one who makes more can afford more, much more. Yet she pays $10,000 less than someone who makes less than her.

Our income tax system is a travesty because it's total bullshit. It should be called "an income tax unless you do the things we want you to do then we'll make it less tax".

It reminds me of those United Way campaigns where the United Way gives you a card that determines your "fair share". They have no idea who you are but they can determine what your "fair share" is based on some nebulous income number.

Given that I make money trying to limit the tax liability of my clients, I should be thankful for such a screwed up system. But more and more, I'm starting to feel like your average crack dealer who rationalizes ruining people's lives with drugs by saying "I'm just giving the public what it wants".

In a FoxNews.com article online February 07, 2011 titled, “Why Can’t Obama Do the Math On Jobs?” economist and author John R. Lott, Jr. showed that the oft-reported and widely trumpeted super intelligence of Barack Obama is far off the mark.

Lott reported that in an address to the U. S. Chamber of Commerce on that date, Obama’s message was that the Chamber, concurrently with the business world, has an obligation to start creating jobs; claiming that “the government has done what it needs to do and any failure lies with the private sector.”

What a bunch of crapola, as Archie Bunker would say; Obama saying that the government has done what it needs to do” is exactly backwards. The government has done what has caused the problems of unemployment with its insane fiscal policies forcing gigantic layoffs and terminations of employment in the workforce raising unemployment numbers to historic levels.

And Obama saying “any failure lies with the private sector” is equally fallacious. For the past two years since his inauguration the unemployment numbers have been steadily rising from less than five percent to above ten percent and currently just a tad below that. If he can’t see that, he is more blind and uncomprehending than a third grade student competing in a Mensa exam.

Unemployment is so bad that over 1.5 million Americans have left the workforce since August, according to John Lott in the above referenced FoxNews.com article. Ironically, these departures of work seekers from the unemployment rolls work against them as it causes the unemployment percentage numbers to decrease.

What do you expect from a guy who was obviously an affirmative action admittance and a graduate who probably never took a math or Econ 101 course? Of course, we'll never know if any of those things are true since he's never released a transcript.

Now, Boxer’s 37-year-olds from 2005 are 43, and the Trust Fund is on a path to go broke when they hit the official retirement age of 67. At that point, Social Security would only be able to cover 78% of total benefits.

Under such a scenario, low-income and very old retirees would surely be protected, leaving less than 78% for the middle class. But let’s take that 22% benefit cut as a base case.

If Social Security was financially solid for 38 years, as Boxer insisted, then average earners ($43,000 in 2010) early in their careers would be able to overcome this benefit cut by setting aside about 2.2% of annual wages in a personal account each year, assuming Treasury returns and a lifetime annuity. That’s about $950 a year in savings.

Of course, Congress hasn’t kept its eye on the future and hasn’t taken steps to boost individual saving. As a result, average earners who are approaching the halfway mark of their careers would have to set aside roughly 5% of annual wages, or $2,150, to make up for what Social Security won’t be able to pay.

See I know this is laughable. I just received my social security statement that shows my employer(s) and I have kicked in $96,000 into the social security system. The present value of those funds is about $140,000.

For them to send me a statement and not have the money to back it up sounds an awful lot like the statements Bernard Madoff sent to his customers............ and he's in prison.

So what senator will be doing time when I can't get the money the government's been investing for me all these working years.

Weakening the democratic party

Voters would be required to show photo identification before they can cast ballots under a proposal passed on to the full Senate on Tuesday.

The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro passed the State and Local Government Committee on a 6-3 vote along party lines and will be scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor.

How it is that I refuse to listen to a government that sounds an awful lot like Emily Litella.....

Remember when our Toyotas went all “Maximum Overdrive” and tried to wipe us out last year? Defective automobiles would suddenly accelerate without warning, putting the lives of helpless passengers on the line. The media and government went ballistic. War was declared on Toyota, complete with congressional hearings, in which Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood actually told motorists they should stop driving their Toyotas until the company could devise a solution to the problem. (He swiftly walked his position back to “encouraging” the owners of suspect Toyota models to “contact their local dealer and get their vehicles fixed as soon as possible.”)

Toyota wound up halting sales on eight of its most popular models, including the Camry, one of the best-selling cars in the United States. The New York Times reports the company paid $48.8 million in fines, and saw its sales drop 0.4 percent in 2010, making it “the only full-line automaker to report lower sales last year.”

It turns out these cases of “sudden acceleration” were not defects in Toyota automobiles at all. After a 10-month investigation, the government concluded the incidents were mostly caused by floor mats interfering with the accelerator pedal, and drivers accidentally hitting the gas instead of the brakes.

I wonder when we're going to get our "never mind" moment on global warming.

In an unprecedented and controversial move, the White House has launched a new program at the Department of Labor which will refer workers who have complaints about their bosses to a toll free number at the American Bar Association, where they can get a lawyer to work on their case on a contingency fee basis.

More than 40,000 workers annually contact the Department of Labor with complaints about their bosses. But Labor can’t get to all of them, an estimated 10%, because of budget constraints, the White House says. So the White House has instead launched a program for “unresolved complainants” with the ABA. Workers will now be provided a toll-free number that connects them with ABA lawyers nationwide who are experienced in things like alleged workplace abuses of minimum wage, overtime and family medical leave laws.

The White House in a statement says this is “a new effort between the federal government and private bar to assist complainants” who may need help with “worker rights.” In a statement, the ABA calls this new alliance “unprecedented.”

But will this create more lawsuits against companies? Will it stymie job creation at the very companies the President says he needs to help lower the high unemployment rate, including small businesses? Will this new program simply make it easier for lawyers to get business they may have garnered anyway?

I'm thinking your average Guatemalan worker doesn't have this amenity.

Responding to the latest undercover video by an anti-abortion group, women's reproductive health care provider Planned Parenthood announced Tuesday it will retrain more than 11,000 staff members at more than 800 centers across the United States.

Planned Parenthood has ordered "all health center staff and educators who have contact with patients and teens be retrained in understanding our policies and procedures for responding to situations that indicate that the welfare of a minor is endangered," Stuart Schear, vice president for communications at Planned Parenthood, said in a statement issued Tuesday.

Or how about this novel idea. Whenever, there is suspicion of child rape you call the police.

Life in "Progress" City - DC edition

The first 75 teachers who former Chancellor Michelle Rhee fired must be given about $7.5 million in back wages and offered positions with D.C. Public Schools, an arbitrator ruled.

"The [termination] process used in this case was so devoid of due process as to be arbitrary and capricious," arbitrator Charles Feigenbaum said in his verdict favoring the Washington Teachers' Union, which has been fighting D.C. Public Schools officials over the July 2008 dismissals for more than two years.

Rhee fired 75 first- and second-year teachers after asking principals to recommend recent hires for dismissal. D.C. Public Schools officials told teachers that they couldn't appeal because they had yet to earn tenure, but did not disclose the reasons for their dismissals.

Despite his federal conviction, former Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge will be able to keep his pension, according to a vote by a police pension board Thursday.

Board member Mike Shields said the board voted 4 to 4 on a motion to terminate Burge’s pension.

A tie vote means the motion failed and Burge will continue receiving the $3,039 monthly pension.

Burge, 63, was sentenced last week to 4 1/2 years in prison following a conviction last summer on perjury and obstruction of justice related to the way he gave answers in a lawsuit that claimed he and underlings tortured murder suspects who were in police custody. He’s scheduled to report to prison in March.

Critics called the decision “outrageous,’’ but Shields, a member of the police department who voted against terminating Burge’s pension, said it boiled down to the “Illinois pension code and case law.

“Jon Burge had no law enforcement duties at the time he was alleged to have committed his crimes of perjury on an interrogatory in a civil deposition,” Shields said.

Meet Stacy Schuler. Why is Stacy in the news.....

Accused Mason teacher Stacy Schuler was released on her own recognizance Tuesday by a judge who sternly warned her to stay away from anyone under the age of 18 and all high schoolers, even if they are 18.

Schuler, 32, of Springboro, was indicted on 16 counts of sexual battery and three counts of serving alcohol to an under-aged person in connection with five male students at Mason High School.

The health and physical education teacher will resign her job at tonight's Mason School Board meeting, said her attorney, Charlie M. Rittgers.

I see that Stacy was a health teacher. I guess all that practice of watching her male students wrap a banana with a condom was just too sexy.

None the less, when Stacy voted in 2008 did she pull the chain for The One or The Maverick?

Why I'm a conservative - The continued ethanol scam

To turn wood chips into ethanol fuel, George W. Bush's Department of Energy in February 2007 announced a $76 million grant to Range Fuels for a cutting-edge refinery. A few months later, the refinery opened in the piney woods of Treutlen County, Ga., as the taxpayers of Georgia piled on another $6 million. In 2008, the ethanol plant was the first beneficiary of the Biorefinery Assistance Program, pocketing a loan for $80 million guaranteed by the U.S. taxpayers.

Last month, the refinery closed down, having failed to squeeze even a drop of ethanol out of its pine chips.

The Soperton, Ga., ethanol plant is another blemish on ethanol's already tarnished image, but more broadly, it is cautionary tale about the elusive nature of "green jobs" and the folly of the government's efforts at "investing" -- as President Obama puts it -- in new technologies.

Late in the Bush administration, corn-based ethanol started to get a bad rap. Corn for ethanol was crowding out other crops, and food prices were soaring. Mexicans rioted as tortilla prices spiked. So Bush started talking up "advanced biofuels" including "cellulosic ethanol": roughly, ethanol distilled from plants that were not also food products. Bush mentioned wood chips and switchgrass in two consecutive State of the Union addresses

Georgia politicians saw an opportunity here. "The Saudi Arabia of Pine Trees" became an unofficial state motto among Peach State politicians, and Gov. Sonny Perdue declared, "I'm confident the bioenergy industry and sector is going to be a cornerstone of the new Georgia."

Amid all this hopeful talk by politicians, there were naysayers among the scientists. One Nobel Prize-winning physicist talked to the New York Times about these startups trying to turn logging waste into fuel. "You have to look at starts with a grain of salt, especially starts where they say, 'It's around the corner, and by the way, can you pay half the bill?' "

Out of curiosity, who do you think ended up with the money thrown at this.

2) Your local radio DJ
3) A chiropractor
4) A lobbyist
5) Some wealthy a hole with access to government.

Our WTF president

For the president, WTF stands for Winning The Future. For the rest of us who use this as a texting abbreviation, it seems more appropriate.

The more I think about his speech to the chamber, the more I keep thinking WTF!

Doesn't this guy understand that companies don't exist to provide jobs to people. They exist to provide returns to investors. In our economy today, those investors are far and wide.

Most of these investors are pension funds who need returns on their investments so that state and city governments don't need to fund as much.

Some of these investors are 401k holders who are requiring returns on their investments in the hope of retiring soon.

Some are current retirees who have invested in companies and need those funds to live on.

Oh and by the way, Governments are dependent upon a thriving business community, where do you think these governments get their money from?

There is almost no one in this country who isn't dependent on a thriving business community to fund some aspect of their life and it's not limited to employment.

I know the clue phone doesn't ring in Obama's world but he needs to catch this one. We are all dependent upon business making money. The fact that Obama claims he will support US enterprise around the world is laughable.

How about making a trip to the Gulf and standing up for off shore drilling?

How about making a trip to West Virginia and extol the virtues of the coal industry?

Clearly this guy either doesn't have a clue or doesn't care. Probably more importantly, no one in his administration seems to either.

Which still leaves me with a big ole WTF!

Liberals for choice

In the state of Ohio, liberals fancy themselves as the party of "choice".

This even applies to education where you get a choice between sending your kids to a dead end, pile of crap, school system (where your kids will be functionally illiterate if you're lucky) or going to jail.............

Perhaps you’ve heard about Kelley Williams-Bolar, the Ohio mother who was recently tried and convicted for falsifying residency records so her daughters could attend a better school where they would receive a quality education.

The “better school” hired a private investigator to prove that Williams-Bolar’s children lived outside the district. As a result, she received a 10-day jail sentence, three years of probation, and a criminal record (two third-degree felonies) that will haunt her for the rest of her working life.

All this happened simply because Williams-Bolar wanted her children to receive a decent education.

Yes, she broke the law and was punished. On strict legal grounds, that was the correct course of action.

But in the broader sense of right and wrong, what happened to Williams-Bolar is an outrage – possibly of game-changing proportions—and should serve as a wakeup call for Americans about the need for bold, substantial school choice laws throughout the country.

When National Public Radio called for my reaction, I compared her to Rosa Parks, the African-American woman who refused to move to the back of the bus when a white passenger needed a seat.

Since Williams-Bolar is also African-American, some seized on this comparison and began making this a story about race. But let me be very clear: this is not about race, this is about injustice.

If this Ohio story becomes just about Williams-Bolar’s race, it would obscure the fact that children of all colors are trapped in crappy schools, simply because of their zip code. And condemning children to a lousy school solely because they have the wrong zip code is a great injustice.

There’s a deeper reason I compare this Ohio mother to the civil rights matriarch. After Rosa Parks was arrested and fined for refusing to move to the back of the bus, Martin Luther King organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott. For one year, African-Americans refused to use the busses, choosing to walk or share rides instead.

We tend to think that Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat and –bam!—people recognized the injustice and it was immediately corrected. In reality, Park’s stand was the first step in a lengthy and difficult process that eventually brought justice and a greater measure of equality. It took a lot of hard work and many uncomfortable moments.

Kelley Williams-Bolar, a single mother whose concern for her daughters’ future was so great that it led her to break the law, has put a human face on school choice cause. Now it is up to education reformers to share her story and bring the case for school choice to the country.

Here's what I don't get. How is it that one of these ambulance chasing, headline huntin', sell their mamas, attorney's haven't filed a class action suit against Ohio's public education?

If you were to guess that it's because most of them are democrats you'd probably be correct.

Cynthia Stroum, 60, who abruptly resigned her post a week ago, spent a year in Luxembourg that was blighted by personality feuds and improper spending, including $3,400 (£2,100) that the embassy rushed to spend on wine and spirits at the end of the 2010 budget year.

A report by the State Department's inspector general found that there was an "absence of a sense of direction" at the embassy and that the ambassador was the source of the "bulk of the mission's internal problems".

Ms Stroum was a businesswoman and investor, credited with saving the Seattle Symohony from bankruptcy, who raised more than $500,000 (£310,000) for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. In recognition of this, she was given the plum posting of Luxembourg.

Presidents often give such jobs to friends and donors, thought Mr Obama had promised to end the practice. In the past 50 years, just three of the 21 ambassadors to Luxembourg have been career diplomats.

When Ms Stroum announced in mid-January that she was leaving, she said that her work at the embassy had been "challenging" and was leaving to spend more time with her family in Seattle.

How sad is it when you can't even handle a Luxembourg appointment?

Subsidizing derelicts

As I've noted in the past. Part of my frustration being a tax preparer is the transformation of my office into a welfare satellite office............

To tens of millions of Americans, the Internal Revenue Service is a source of income, not a dreaded tax collector. Though not widely known, the IRS administers "one of the federal government's largest benefit programs for working families and individuals."

By claiming certain "credits," primarily the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit, eligible tax filers receive a check from the IRS even if they have paid no federal income tax during the year. The EITC is a form of negative income tax, the merits of which will not be debated here. EITC is the "largest cash assistance program targeted at low-income families."

In 2008, of the approximately 142 million Forms 1040 filed, 25 million included EITC claims totaling $51.6 billion. After considering income tax and FICA offsets, the IRS paid out $45 billion in EITC benefits for the 2008 tax year. Another $20.5 billion was paid for Additional Child Tax Credits. In 2009, according to the IRS, over 26 million people received nearly $59 billion in EITC benefits. These amounts don't include similar benefits paid by many state governments.

If you were to meet, first hand, some of the people who are claiming the EITC along with their assortment of other government programs, it would make you sick. Many of these people come into my office stoned and/or drunk. Most are dragging kids in here that have noticeable child neglect issues (mainly their parent being stoned).

You'll see a parent claiming three kids on a return; none of which have the same last name.

I always challenge my liberal friends with the notion that they would never let a relative live in their home displaying the kind of behavior exhibited by these low lifes and yet they continue to support subsidies to these derelicts.

When you subsidize something, you get more of it. As a result we now have a population of Snooki's...... without the class.

I've spent the better part of my life boycotting anything Time Warner.

Time Warner has spent the better part of my lifetime selling the lowest common denominator of entertainment/news to the American public.

It doesn't matter if it's producing cop killer, pornographic rap music or a news magazine that makes Pravda look like Fox News. If it's Time Warner, I ain't with it.

For crying out loud, I even had to give up my Sports Illustrated subscription because of their push to make it a left wing sports magazine.

So it just seems like a great fit that AOL buys The Huffington Post.......

AOL Inc has agreed to buy The Huffington Post, the influential and rapidly growing news, analysis and lifestyle website, for $315 million, the struggling U.S. Internet company announced on Monday.

The move will create a media group that will have a combined base of 117 million visitors a month in the United States, and reach 270 million people globally, AOL said in a statement.

The deal follows efforts by AOL’s chief executive Tim Armstrong to turn around the dial-up Internet access business by trying to turn it into a media and entertainment powerhouse, despite difficulties in attracting investors.

AOL suffered sharp declines in advertising sales and dial-up subscriptions in the fourth quarter of 2010, driving overall revenue down 26 percent.

Arianna Huffington, co-founder of The Huffington Post, said on her blog that she would lead a newly formed The Huffington Post Media Group, which will integrate all Huffington Post and AOL content, as its president and editor-in-chief.

I've always loved it how liberals love to tell other people how best to use their property/investments. Of course, we have no better example than Heir Obama telling businesses what they need to do with their businesses............

“If we make America the best place to do business, businesses should make their mark in America,” the president said. “They should set up shop here, and hire our workers, and pay decent wages, and invest in the future of this nation. That’s their obligation.”

Earth to Obama, when a company submits their application for a corporate charter, there is absolutely nothing in the application to make hiring American workers and paying them well part of the approval process.

Of course, he would know this if he ever would have read the letter from TJ Rodgers to Sister Gormley who derided Rodgers for lack of diversity and social justice in his company........

Those are some of the policies of the Board of Directors you voted against. I believe you should support management teams that hold our values and have the courage to put them into practice.

So, that's my reply. Choosing a Board of Directors based on race and gender is a lousy way to run a company. Cypress will never do it. Furthermore, we will never be pressured into it, because bowing to well-meaning, special-interest groups is an immoral way to run a company, given all the people it would hurt. We simply cannot allow arbitrary rules to be forced on us by organizations that lack business expertise. I would rather be labeled as a person who is unkind to religious groups than as a coward who harms his employees and investors by mindlessly following high-sounding, but false, standards of right and wrong.

You may think this letter is too tough a response to a shareholder organization voting its conscience. But the political pressure to be what is euphemistically called a "responsible corporation" today is so great that it literally threatens the well being of every American.

This letter should be required reading and testing for every student in this country beyond the age of 10.

Health insurance is a basic economic issue for all Americans, not just the 30 million people without coverage.

Republican efforts to turn repeal of the Affordable Care Act into political theater exemplify the party's detachment from ordinary lives in troubled times.

Easy assumptions about access to affordable care disappeared along with jobs in the recession. Medical problems have no respect for employment or party status. The most frugal family budgets are vulnerable.

Republicans, with their repeal vote in the House of Representatives and Wednesday's charade in the Senate, truly reveal how much they do not get it. They rant about Obamacare as they willfully distort the fiscal impacts, and fail to offer a single idea of their own. Random speeches do not count. Where is their star-spangled legislation to provide relief for anxious families?

Since when did it happen that because a family is experiencing anxiety, we're all supposed to kick in and salve the wound?

Let me educate Mr. Dickie to Valentine's Axiom (my name/my axiom). The further removed the payor gets from actually cutting the check, the higher the inflation rate for services rendered.

If you need any examples just look at higher education. More money for student loans, Pell Grants etc. education inflation is double the CPI.

I'm old enough to remember when health insurance was called "hospitalization" because nothing was covered until you were on a gurney in the emergency room. Then some bright insurance executive came up with a great idea. Let's pool together all of our policy holders, negotiate terms for everything and that will slow down the costs of inflation. We'll call it an HMO and save all kinds of money for policy holders.

How did that work out?

Years ago, I went to the pharmacy to get a $14 antibiotic and the clerk insisted on my insurance card. After I told him I had no script coverage, he told me " you know that will be a lot cheaper if you have the coverage". I then challenged him to tell me how's it's so much cheaper for me to pay an extra $40.00 a month when I've paid $14.00 for the entire year for one script.

How did people become so stupid to this reality?

A couple of months ago, I was approached by a laser eye center employee who told me they could do the laser surgery on both eyes for $800.00. I'm old enough to remember when people were paying $5,000 to have that done and yet the technology is better and the price has dropped.

Why?

I'd bet a lot of money if the government got involved, the prices wouldn't have decreased at all.

Same with cosmetic surgery, where boob jobs were only had by the rich and famous. Now with the swipe of a credit card you can practically get one in a drive through window.

I continue to believe that the day when people start actually cutting the checks for their own healthcare, prices for services will drop dramatically. I only have my opinion and thousands of years of human history to back me up.

The inability of power companies to meet demand is almost exclusively a consequence of the Obama administration’s publicly stated goal to bankrupt the coal industry and in turn ram through the de-industrialization of America under the guise of the phony global warming mantra.

Even as China and Mexico are allowed to build dozens of new power plants every year, the United States is barely permitted to construct a handful, as the Environmental Protection Agency takes control of refineries and power plants under the completely fraudulent pretext of preventing global warming even as the country experiences some of the coldest weather seen for decades.

Texas has been the epicenter in a battle over the Obama administration’s drive to have the EPA regulate greenhouse gas emissions. Texas is the only state that has refused to implement a permit process.

“Austin said it would not establish such a scheme for greenhouse gas emissions because the US Environmental Protection Agency had no authority to regulate them as of January 2,” reported the Financial Times.

“Twelve other states are mounting a legal challenge to the federal government’s authority but they, unlike Texas, are implementing the new measures while the dispute makes its way through the courts.”

Local environmental officials in Texas were again involved in a fight with the EPA after the, “Texas Commission on Environmental Quality last week approved an air permit for the $3.2 billion Las Brisas Energy Center despite a formal EPA request that the commission delay issuing the permit until EPA’s concerns about the plant’s emissions impacts are fully addressed.”

We don't need no stinkin' jobs

Shell Alaska has dropped plans to drill in the Arctic waters of the Beaufort Sea this year and will concentrate on obtaining permits for the 2012 season, company Vice President Pete Slaiby said Thursday.

The recent remand of air permits issued by the Environmental Protection Agency was the final driver behind the decision, Slaiby said at a news conference.

Alaska receives upward of 90 percent of its general fund revenue from the petroleum industry, and top state officials reacted strongly to the decision. U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, blamed the Obama administration and the EPA.

"Their foot dragging means the loss of another exploration season in Alaska, the loss of nearly 800 direct jobs and many more indirect jobs," Begich said. "That doesn't count the millions of dollars in contracting that won't happen either at a time when our economy needs the investment."

When will someone be indicted?

If a company’s financial reporting were so bad that its auditor had pointed out significant weaknesses in its accounting for seven years running, the Securities and Exchange Commission would most likely be all over it.

But what if the company were the S.E.C. itself?

Since the commission began producing audited statements in 2004, the Government Accountability Office has faulted its reporting almost every year. Last November, the G.A.O. said that the commission’s books were in such disarray that it had failed at some of the agency’s most fundamental tasks: accurately tracking income from fines, filing fees and the return of ill-gotten profits.

“A reasonable possibility exists that a material misstatement of S.E.C.’s financial statements would not be prevented, or detected and corrected on a timely basis,” the auditor concluded.

Once again, if this were a private company, someone would be catching a little hell. When it's the government............ they call it business as usual.

Why I'm a conservative #25

About 20% of federal tax credits claimed for alternative and plug-in electric vehicles during the first seven months of 2010 were erroneous, costing U.S. taxpayers more than $33 million, the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration said Thursday.

The tax credits are designed to encourage consumers to buy energy-efficient vehicles, such as General Motors' Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf, which typically cost more than conventional gas-powered vehicles.

The Obama administration recently announced plans to have 1 million advanced-technology vehicles on the road by 2015.

Taxpayers who purchase eligible vehicles can receive a tax credit worth up to $7,500. The inspector general's report found, though, that most of the erroneous credits were claimed for vehicles that weren't eligible for the tax break.

Ineligible vehicles owned by taxpayers who claimed the credit included the Hyundai Sonata, the Buick Enclave, and a bicycle, the report found.

The report also found that 29 prisoners also received a total of $49,926 in vehicle credits even though they were in prison at the time they claimed them.

Liberal stupidity is becoming contagious

Seriously, do these people think the average business person is a flaming moron.................

President Barack Obama, turning briefly to his eclipsed domestic agenda Thursday, called on the nation's businesses to make fresh investments in clean energy technology that lay a foundation for long-term American prosperity.

He proposed a new tax credit and other measures to encourage businesses to retrofit their plants and reduce costs — steps that he said would save $40 billion a year in utility bills.

First off, your average business owner/executive does this crazy shit. Economists call it a cost/benefit analysis. If the benefit outweighs the cost, the investment will be made. Apparently, that's a foreign concept for our president. I guess a liberal will only make an investment if he's getting a tax credit or an "attaboy" for it.

For a rational business owner, if an investment pays for itself, you won't have to wait for a tax credit to get it done.

For instance, yours truly, spent $4,500 a couple of years ago for foam insulation on a 108 year old house converted to an office. I didn't do it because I was trying to wean the world from fossil fuels, I did it because it saved me about $100 a month in utility costs.

The year before that, I invested $2000 in new windows for much the same reason.

I didn't need any Obama tax credits to do what was already in my economic interest, I simply did the math.

But then again, math, along with economics is yet another subject these Ivy Leaguers must have missed while getting those impressive degrees.

An epic winter storm Wednesday buried more than a third of the United States in drifting snow, sleet and ice that brought air and road travel to a halt.

Snowstorms also paralyzed air transport, blocked operations in factories and caused schools to shut in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Ciudad Juarez mayor Hector Murgia said the temperatures of around minus 13 degrees centigrade (8.6 Fahrenheit) were the lowest recorded in almost 50 years.

CKE Restaurants Inc., the owner of the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's chains, is considering moving its headquarters from California to Texas. It could be an easy sell for the Lone Star State.

CEO Andrew Puzder and President Michael Murphy met with Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday for the first time to talk about the company's possible expansion. The move could mean 500 new jobs for Texas, which the company already had identified as a top growth market for its fast-food restaurants.

Austin, among other large Texas cities, would be a possible site for a new headquarters.

"We're going to do a lot of restaurant development in Texas over the next 10 years," Puzder said. "We're considering maybe moving some of the headquarters — or all of the headquarters — here if we have a good business reason to do so, because the tax structure is certainly right, and the business-friendly environment is right."

About three years ago, the state of Ohio passed a law severely limiting paycheck lending operations.

At the time, I had a commenter suggest that those weren't "quality" jobs. I'm guessing that he would consider someone pushing meat on the American public as non "quality".

I wonder if he would like to have those non quality jobs today?

I used to love Newt. I always thought he was a great thinker and an originator of provocative ideas.

I don't believe I could ever support him for president because he lacks executive experience and we can see where that's got us today. In addition, his marital fidelity issues I believe cast a pall on his character.

Regardless, his blatant arrogant support of ethanol subsidies tells me that he either 1) lacks the intestinal fortitude to tell the truth to power or 2) isn't that smart after all.............

The former Speaker blew through Des Moines last Tuesday for the Renewable Fuels Association summit, and his keynote speech to the ethanol lobby was as pious a tribute to the fuel made from corn and tax dollars as we've ever heard. Mr. Gingrich explained that "the big-city attacks" on ethanol subsidies are really attempts to deny prosperity to rural America, adding that "Obviously big urban newspapers want to kill it because it's working, and you wonder, 'What are their values?'"

Mr. Gingrich traced the roots of these supposed antipathies to the 1880s, an observation that he repeatedly tendered "as an historian." The Ph.D. and star pupil of futurist Alvin Toffler then singled out the Journal's long-held anti-ethanol views as "just plain flat intellectually wrong."

Mr. Gingrich is right that ethanol poses an intellectual problem, but it has nothing to do with a culture war between Des Moines and New York City. The real fight is between the House Republicans now trying to rationalize the federal fisc and the kind of corporate welfare that President Obama advanced in his State of the Union. We'll dwell on this problem not merely because Mr. Gingrich the historian brought it up, but because it and he illustrate so many of the snares facing the modern GOP.

This ranks right up there with Mitt Romney blatantly lying to Michigan voters in the last presidential campaign.

He might have received the support of some Iowa corn farmer somewhere be he definitely lost it with at least one Ohio voter.

Meet another mother of the year, Jennifer Cole, spawned by our ridiculous welfare system.

Why is Jennifer in the news?

Bond has been set at $14,500 for Jennifer Cole, the woman accused of overdosing in a restaurant bathroom in front of her three young kids.

Police say Cole and her three boys were at Noce's Pizzeria Friday when Cole went into the bathroom to inject heroin. A worker later heard the kids screaming, opened the bathroom door, and found Cole passed out on the floor.

Cole was taken to the hospital, then to the Hamilton County Justice Center. She's charged with three counts of child endangering.

Over the weekend, I watched the show "Shameless" starring William H Macy. If you ever wanted to see what the welfare state has created in this country, watch one episode of the show. It would be funny if there wasn't three kids in a pizza shop watching their mother OD on heroin in real life.
