As soon as I heard the weather forecast this morning, I knew we were all going to die in the next 24 hours.

But then I read this piece by the god father of modern day liberalism, George McGovern, and now I'm certain we don't have long to live.

Health-care paternalism creates another problem that's rarely mentioned: Many people can't afford the gold-plated health plans that are the only options available in their states.

Buying health insurance on the Internet and across state lines, where less expensive plans may be available, is prohibited by many state insurance commissions. Despite being able to buy car or home insurance with a mouse click, some state governments require their approved plans for purchase or none at all. It's as if states dictated that you had to buy a Mercedes or no car at all.

With payday lending, people in need of immediate money can borrow against their future paychecks, allowing emergency purchases or bill payments they could not otherwise make. The service comes at the cost of a significant fee -- usually $15 for every $100 borrowed for two weeks. But the cost seems reasonable when all your other options, such as bounced checks or skipped credit-card payments, are obviously more expensive and play havoc with your credit rating.

Anguished at the fact that payday lending isn't perfect, some people would outlaw the service entirely, or cap fees at such low levels that no lender will provide the service. Anyone who's familiar with the law of unintended consequences should be able to guess what happens next.

Client How do I owe that much to the city of Wyoming, I thought my employer withheld Wyoming tax from my check?

Gordon That's the school district tax.

Client School district tax?

Gordon Yes Wyoming school district has an income tax to fund their schools.

Client And they have a city tax? But I pay the city of Cincinnati city tax?

Gordon Well you pay the city the city tax for the city you work in as well as the city you reside in. Some cities allow a credit for the tax they pay to the city they work in, Wyoming does not.

Client So I pay 2.1% to the city of Cincinnati for working there, 1% to the city of Wyoming for living there, and 1% for the school district where I have no kids in the schools.

Gordon That's correct.

Client Jesus (&*%*^# ! I might as well move back to New York.

Cook county secession

A Cook County community outside of Chicago isn't happy about the sales tax increase passed by the county. So much so they're looking to secede.

"What really gets me most is it's not only us: It's going to be the schools along with the village, the park district, any taxing body -- the dollars are going to shift from our area," said Council member Scott Lamerand, who was among those leading the push to explore withdrawing from the county.

Don't worry about seceding, the citizens are already doing it for you. They call it moving south.

A number of school district levies took a beating yesterday.

Now if you were one of those voters who think the schools need money and voted yes on a levy, the schools are expecting your check.

Seriously, why don't you cut a check to the schools, or are you the type that just want other people to pay the freight?

In Loveland, 4,314 voters voted yes to the levy. How much money do you think they'll kick in to the schools now that the levy has been defeated?

There is no law preventing anyone from providing a contribution to their local school district. For crying out loud, you can at least send them the $50 you pay for that license plate with your alma mater on it. I've commented before on people who will donate to their college endowment which needs no money v their local public school.

Just a hunch, but I'm thinking you won't be able to buy a happy meal with the money these folks will donate to the school system this year.

Once again, the city of Chicago, showing that "progressive" doesn't just mean high taxes (10.25% sales tax) it also means doing other "progressive" things like banning baggies.

Seven As I left the polling place yesterday, a woman thanked me for voting. If she knew what I voted on, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have been thanking me.

But it did cause me to question. Why would someone thank me for doing my civic duty? People don't thank me for putting my garbage to the curb each week.

School Levies

Well my community in Loveland voted down a levy yesterday 57-43. I would call that resounding NO.

So what can we expect from our local school district? Another levy vote in November. Oh, this one will be smaller and the threatened cuts will be more severe starting with football and bus service. By the way, did you ever notice they never threaten to cut valuable "administrators" from the budget.

But we'll still have to show up and vote it down again. Then they'll really cut some stuff and put the vote on a special ballot and ultimately pass they levy they wanted.

This is a tiresome process and is all too predictable.

The schools are a mandate by the state. As such, the state should be required to fund the education they mandate. If a school district wants more, they should fund it through their levies.

Until that fundamental change occurs, this levy dance will continue.

WHEN VOTERS IN OHIO go to the polls today, they will have heard over and over again from Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that their state's economic troubles are caused by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and other trade treaties.

But there was fresh evidence last week that NAFTA has had little to do with Ohio's doldrums, its job losses in particular. When the U.S. Air Force awarded a $40 billion contract for 179 new aerial refueling tankers, Ohio wasn't in the running as a site where the aircraft might be built. Instead, they'll be built in Alabama outside Mobile.

Why? The answer is simple: Alabama's business climate is good and Ohio's isn't. When major business projects are looking for the best site, job-hungry Ohio is rarely considered. And NAFTA has little or nothing to do with it.

Surely Obama and Clinton know this. If they don't, their understanding of the economy is lacking. If they do, their attacks on free trade were aimed to please NAFTA-hating union members. In truth, NAFTA is a boon to the Ohio economy. Roughly 55 percent of Ohio's exports go to Canada and Mexico, America's NAFTA partners. That exceeds the national share of exports--35 percent--to those countries.

For Alabama, the awarding of the tanker contract was only its latest economic coup. Earlier this year, Thiessen Krupp, the German steel company, decided to build a $3.7 billion plant near Mobile. And Alabama has attracted three foreign automakers to build plants in the state: Mercedes, Honda, and Hyundai.

Ohio was once an economic powerhouse, but now it lags behind Alabama in almost everything that might lure new business to the state. "Ohio has raced past 41 other states and now ranks 5th in state and local taxes measured as a percentage of income," David Hansen, president of the Buckeye Institute, wrote last year. Alabama, in contrast, ranks 46th in tax burden.

Apparently she's no "low-level" volunteer either. She serves as a campaign 'precinct captain" and the co-chair of the Houston Obama Leadership Team.

Most interestingly, she is a middle-aged woman who was born in Cuba and lived there as a child during a period when Che Guevara was Cuba's chief executioner and second in command. At the time Cuba had the highest political incarceration and execution rate on earth, far surpassing that of their Soviet mentors and suitors. Pictures have surfaced (see Babalu blog.com) of Maria Isabel at several Obama campaign functions; arm in arm with Barack, in a bear hug with Michelle Obama, and apparently, very heavily involved in the Obama campaign.

Before I got my crack, I had to sign a document proclaiming my allegiance to the democratic candidates & principles. So I guess I am now a proud supporter of unemployment, poverty, crime & horrible schools.

It was a lot easier than I thought given my incredible dislike of all things Clinton. Hopefully my vote will be the vote that throws the DNC convention into an actual event and not a 8 hour campaign speech.

10.25% sales tax

Whenever I fret about Ohio's long term economic status trending to third world status, another "progressive" region comes along to out do us.

The city of Chicago just bumped their sales tax rate to 10.25%. That's going to create just the economic stimulus they've been looking for.

Among the things Chicago wants to be known for, having the highest total sales taxes of any major U.S. city is probably not one of them.

But that's what it's getting after the Cook County Board voted Saturday to double the county sales tax to 1.75 percent. When added to the city's sales tax, the county' increase has the cumulative effect of setting a 10.25 percent sales tax on goods bought in Chicago.

When the county rate increase takes effect in November, someone buying $100 worth of merchandise in Chicago would pay $110.25.

The rates in New York and Los Angeles are below 8.5 percent. The next highest rate in the country is in Memphis, Tenn., at 9.25 percent.

The tax increase is expected to add about $426 million annually to county coffers, and the money is meant to close a projected $234 million deficit. The budget is also designed to create more than 1,000 new county jobs.

``By passing this budget, the board has breathed life into this county government,'' Board President Todd Stroger said. The budget passed on a 10-7 vote.

Those who opposed the increase say reform, not revenue, should have been priority No. 1.

``The real elephant in the room is the waste and bloat and bureaucracy here in the county,'' said Timothy Schneider, a county commissioner.

I just happened to catch this information from the Athens County (OH) Dept. of Family services.

Were you aware that Athens County has the highest poverty rate in the state (27.4%)? What about one of the highest unemployment rates in the state at 6.1%?

But on good note, Athens Ohio is considered the most "progressive" city in the state of Ohio.

Is it possible what makes it the most poverty stricken is also what makes it the most "progressive"?

What's so "progressive" about poverty"?

To unionize or not to unionize, that is the question.

Mercy Health Partners will have a vote on March 14 on the unionization of it's employees.

If you are a nurse, ask yourself this question, is the workplace over at University Hospital (union) a better work environment than Bethesda North (non union).

I'm just going to go on the word of someone who knows, Mrs. Gekko, who started her Cincinnati nursing career at University and moved to B-North about 60 days later. Ask her about the number of ding dongs and derelicts employed at that hospital as compared to B-North.

So if you are a ding dong or a derelict or you want to be surrounded by such, you will definitely want to vote for the union. And Mrs. Gekko will be meeting your non dip shit employees soon.

I can't help it, but reading about such episodes of screaming, gushing and swooning makes me wonder whether women -- I should say "we women," of course -- aren't the weaker sex after all. Or even the stupid sex, our brains permanently occluded by random emotions, psychosomatic flailings and distraction by the superficial. Women "are only children of a larger growth," wrote the 18th-century Earl of Chesterfield. Could he have been right?

All the pollsters, consultants, and media types keep wondering why The Billary cannot seem to get any traction against Obamamania.

The fact is every weakness Obamamania has, The Billary is equally weak.

Experience? where's The Billary's experience? One extra term in the Senate where she did nothing but run for president?

Vetting? Where are all those tax returns? How about some financial disclosures on that library? What about releasing the documents on that health care debacle? The one thing The Billary did run.

Corruption? We're talking The Billary?

So what you have is varying shades of liberalism where neither candidate stands out except for one characteristic.

One candidate is a dynamic charismatic speaker, the other is The Billary.

So democrats get to choose from a great high school debater and a pissed off ex wife.

DUI checkpoint a "success"

I've been commenting for some time about how the police haven't publicized the arrest at previous DUI checkpoints because, in my opinion, they've been a complete failure.

Lo and behold a successful one.

Officers arrested 17 drivers accused of operating a motor vehicle impaired - one of the higher arrest tallies for such an effort in recent months.

Four of the arrests were made at a previously announced drunken driving checkpoint on U.S. 127 from 11 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday; 13 of the arrests came from extra patrols in areas near the checkpoint, police said.

In addition, police ticketed six motorists for allegedly driving under suspension, five for speeding, 13 for other moving violations and four for failure to wear seat belts. The Butler County OVI Task Force and Fairfield police coordinated the enforcement effort.

Wow 17 DUI's, now that's a success!

But think for a minute on this. A Friday night between 11:00 and 3:00. I would venture that finding a drunk driver would be like shooting fish in a barrel yet we had all this man power (if someone knows how many man these posts, let me know).

I would think that each and every man on duty should have been able to arrest at least one DUI that night on general patrol. In addition, your true drunk isn't going through the checkpoint, he's driving all kinds of routes to avoid them.

These are a complete waste of government resource until someone can convince me otherwise.

For one old dude this, Kissinger (84) guy still gets it.

In this interview with Spiegel online, he provides great insight as to why European leaders love George Bush. Basically, they can use him as a punching bag to mask their own inferior policies yet know that the US will always do the heavy lifting. Pretty much the thinking of liberals around the world; let the rich pay for everything and then bitch because you have nothing.

Cracking down on illegals

Norbert Nadel wants the state to pass a law making it illegal to hire an illegal.

A Hamilton County judge is asking Ohio lawmakers to adopt a law that punishes those who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

"This cracks down on the employers," Judge Norbert Nadel said Wednesday. "If there's no well for them to drink out of, they won't come."

Nadel has nothing against immigrants, but thinks they should be here legally.

Hey Norbert, what exactly do you do when an illegal passes through your courtroom? Do you call INS? There's no mention in the article of the criminal being passed to INS once his sentence is completed.

I was in a muni court a few years ago on a traffic ticket. I was struck by the number of immigrants in court for DUI's, drving without insurance, license, etc.

What do you think the judge did in each of those cases? If you answered nothing, you get a gold star.

So let me make sure I have this right. We, as employers, have to do law enforcements job. The legal system does nothing when they have an illegal and yet we're punished when we don't even have the resources available to check to see if the applicant's documentation is fraudulent.

Shock jocks are shocking, imagine that.

I haven't commented on the talk show host/ blabber mouth McCain fiasco because that's what these guys want; say something shocking and get on the news. What great publicity.

Now that the news has passed like a bad meal through my intestines, let me make these points.

1) Why do news media types acknowledge these things when they occur. The talk show host involved got tons of mileage out of this and the national news media play right along like some kind of lap dog. These guys are like kids, ignore them when they pull attention getters.

2) Since when did someone's name become an off limits attack. His middle name is Hussein. Deal with it. If he can't handle the truth then he doesn't have thick enough skin to be president.

3) Remember when John F. Kerry kept using that "F" initial in his name to create some kind of bull crap imagery of another Massachusetts JFK. Well, using your name as imagery is part of the game, positive and negative. By the way, I'm pretty sure the F stands for Francois.

4) McCain, how is it he found the fortitude to call out a shock jock but didn't call out the woman who called The Billary a bitch?

5) Once again, the national media is handling their candidate with kid gloves. As a result, he'll get pounded with a "swift boat" moment because the campaign will be ill prepared to deal with the fallout.

6) The national media has done a horrible job of vetting it's candidate. I guess it's hard to vet ole Che while you're screaming like a little girl at a Beattle's concert.

Let me tell you a little about my story. My wife and I wanted a nice house to move into. After all, it didn't seem fair that our neighbors were moving out into nice homes in the suburbs when they don't work nearly as hard as we do.

So we went house shopping and found a wonderful 4 bedroom 2 & 1/2 bath 3500 square foot house out in West Chester for $360,000. Even though there's only two of us we thought we could use the extra space and besides our whole goal was to get in at $360 and sell in a couple of years for $450,000 and use those profits to move into a $500,000 house over by the TPC.

Unfortunately, we ran into a problem. My wife works for a local credit union earning $40,000/year and I'm a self employed landscaper pulling in around $40,000 per year. Our real estate agent told us that we were going to have a problem getting approved for a mortgage because our incomes weren't sufficient for the mortgage amount. In addition, since we had no down payment, we were going to have the additional expense of PMI insurance.

After talking to some buddies in a bar, someone told me about these "stated income" loans. Where you simply tell the mortgage broker how much you make and they'll accept that as your income number.

So I filled out an application telling the broker I made $100,000 along with my wife's $40,000 and, bang, we had our home.

In order to make the payment fit our limited budget, we did a variable rate loan which got the payment down to $4,076 a month.

Now, with interest rate hikes and a recently passed school levy, our new mortgage payment is 5,102 a month. No one told us about this and we feel that were duped into buying much more house than we could afford.

So we look forward to your free legal service. I think it's totally appropriate for the state to pay for those fees when it's their fault we bought too much house. Never mind, people filing bankruptcy receive no free legal services because they were dumb and irresponsible.

So please call me when the state approves your proposal, we can use your services.

Middle-income Milwaukee neighborhoods declined in number, he said, while wealthy and poor neighborhoods increased. In 1970, the city had 11 census tracts in which 40% or more of the residents were poor, but by 2000, that had jumped to 43 census tracts.

According to U.S. Census figures, Milwaukee's poverty rate now ranks in the top 10 cities, and 1 out of 3 children in Milwaukee Public Schools is living in poverty.

So if you are trying to fix the problems in the city of Milwaukee what do you do?

If you're a "progressive" you come up with one of those new and original ideas to fix the problem; like a tax increase to fund more social programs.

All you "progressives" have been bitching about the Iraq War now for three years. When are you going to start addressing your war on poverty that we've spent trillions on over the past forty years and guess what? We still have poverty!

Where "progressives" attend college

For some time now, I've been beating on the ruins "progressive" government has turned our cities and school districts into. But what about colleges run by "progressives" and who's alumni are "progressive" such as Antioch College, in Yellow Springs Ohio.

Antioch College is scheduled to close this summer for the 2008-09 academic year after trustees confimed a decision made last year.

The board of the Yellow Springs school said at a meeting in Los Angeles that it opted to suspend the college effective June 30 and close it for the 2008-09 academic year after it ran out of time to reach an agreement on the transfer of the college to an independent group called the Antioch College Continuation Corp. The board hopes to reopen for the 2009-10 academic year.

The board had decided in November to reverse a decision to close the financially troubled college after alumni raised millions of dollars and reached an agreement in principle with the board to halt the decision. In a statement Friday, the board said several large donors and members of the alumni board disputed the agreements and insisted on more authority for the proposed separate board of trustees and ultimately a full separation.

The decision will affect about 200 students and more than 120 faculty and staff, the university said.

I guess they can't even run a "progressive" university either. Gee, I wonder how this school stacks up against Hillsdale college who takes no federal or state funding for any of it's curriculum.

Bobby Cutts, a true class individual. Here's a list of his accomplishments.

A jury began deliberating Tuesday whether to recommend the death sentence for a former police officer convicted of killing his girlfriend and their unborn daughter.

A sobbing Bobby Cutts Jr. appealed to the jury Monday to spare his life. It was the same jury that convicted Cutts earlier this month.

He said he took responsibility for the deaths of Jessie Davis, 26, and the couple's unborn daughter last June and that he didn't mean to kill them.

Two weeks ago, Cutts sobbed on the witness stand as he testified that he had accidentally killed Davis with an elbow blow to the throat during a disagreement and dumped her body at a park in a panic.

Despite being a recovering liberal, I'm still a registered democrat.

Since the primary season is over for the GOP, I'm thinking what democrat will I vote for in the primary?

I hated The Billary so much, during their reign in the 90's I voted in the primary just to cast a vote for Lyndon LaRouche.

It's a true dilemma.

I think a little history is in order

The whole deal with writing "progress" in quotes has been in response to a comment a reader posted a few of months ago.

"'conservatives' are for status quo while "progressives" are for progress. I can live with that definition."

As a result of the comment, I've been waiting like the second coming for someone to tell me what "progress" progressive government has brought to our society.

Since democrats run all large cities and school systems in the US, I figure that's a perfect place to analyze the results of "progressive" governance.

Well, I'm still waiting for some "progressive" to tell me how dilapidated slums in cities are "progressive" or how 30% graduation rates in inner city schools is "progress".

So until someone can tell me how "progressives" have actually brought "progress" to anything, I will continue with the quotations.

If you're one of those "progressive" types, you probably don't believe in the death penalty.

One of the reasons? You probably believe that once we incarcerate an inmate for life he's no longer a threat to society.

What about Jame Were?

He's in prison awaiting his death sentence for the murder of Robert Vallandingham. He's no threat to society now that's he's in prison is he?

Except for the fact that his murder conviction occurred while he was in prison.

James Were, 51, was convicted in the April 1993 murder and kidnapping of corrections officer Robert Vallandingham. Were was serving time at Southern Ohio Correctional Institution in Lucasville on assault and robbery charges when a riot broke out, killing Vallandingham and nine inmates.

In court papers, Were's attorneys argue the trial judge erred by disregarding evidence that the defendant is mentally retarded.

Were's first murder conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2002 because the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court failed to hold a hearing on his mental competency.

During a second trial, Were was found guilty and sentenced to death for Vallandingham's murder.

Naaah, he's no threat to society. Well unless you don't consider Robert Vallandingham and the nine inmates members of it.

He wanted to explain that he was too good — too patriotic! — to wear a flag pin on his chest.

I never thought I would see the narcissism of The Billary topped but that was before Obamamania hit the stage.

Obamamania needs more than speech?

But he is also wise to imply there might be a vacuum beneath that veneer.

The point of the article? Obamamania needs more than flowery rhetoric to win the presidency.

Apparently, all those really smart "progressives" are willing to vote for a guy who's eloquent but offers nothing substantive in terms policy initiatives. Who are the rest of us to argue?

A long time ago I got into a heated debate on the abortion issue with a friend and this was how the dialog went.

I know of six women who have had abortions. If you were to ask any of them if they would do it again, they would tell you no.

Now I also know of a woman who has had multiple abortions. Ask her if she would do it again, she would obviously tell you yes. That is.... if she were sober enough to utter the words.

Planned Parenthood is all gung ho about making sure women don't have unwanted children but they couldn't care less about the after effects of the procedure. Want to know why we never see studies on the emotional effects of having an abortion? Because everyone already knows the answer.

The van driver who witnesses say plowed into a school bus, killing four children, appeared in court Friday to face vehicular homicide charges. But authorities still aren't sure who she is, saying she's in the country illegally and using a phony name.

Sitting in a wheelchair with a broken leg Friday in Lyon County District Court, the woman said her name was Alianiss Nunez Morales. She said she'd been working in a Cottonwood, Minn., cabinet shop and living with her boyfriend in a trailer in nearby Minneota until they broke up Tuesday, the day of the crash.

But federal immigration investigator Claude Arnold said Morales is not the woman's name, and she is not revealing her identity. He said that she is here illegally, probably from Mexico.

Well, at least if she would have lived in NY, Gov. Spitzer would have seen that she had a driver's license. That would have solved everything.

The other thing that’s bothering me is this Barry Hussein Jr., guy. How long is the Punahou Kid going to be able to skate on The Audacity of Hope and The Hope of Audacity? When you actually look at his voting record — and we sure hope you never do — you notice that basically he’s more or less of a commie, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Some of my best friends are commies, er, “progressives.”

But the whole cool thing about being a far-Left liberal is that we’re like undercover secret agents, who have to shield our real goals and motives from you, the suckers. How far would we get if we actually came out and said that we want to nationalize health care, raise taxes to confiscatory levels on the filthy rich who make more than $75,000 a year, preemptively surrender in Iraq, and flood the country with illegal aliens and then turn them into citizens in a transparent attempt to get votes and keep the Ponzi Scheme solvent?

I'm sure in America's Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy there are similar mixed feelings. The Clintons have met their Waterloo but it's not some doughty conservative warrior who gets to play Duke of Wellington, only some freshman pap peddler of liberal boilerplate whom no one had heard of the day before yesterday.
